Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Tunbridge Scores a Brace as Men’s Soccer Downs Pacific, 4-0

SAN DIEGO – The San Diego men's soccer program (10-4-3, 4-1-1 WCC) emerged with a key victory in their quest for a WCC title, defeating Pacific (5-7-4, 1-4-1 WCC), 4-0, on Saturday night at Torero Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Torero offense jumped on the Pacific defense early in the game, but were unable to reap the rewards of their start until the second half.
  • San Diego outshot Pacific 14-4 in the opening frame and had several strong chances to score throughout the opening half.
  • It all came together for the Toreros in the second half, as Rhys Gourdie recorded the first goal of the game.
  • Cesar Bahena would dribble into the box from the wing, feeding Mason Tunbridge who slipped a pass to Gourdie, who trickled a goal past the outstretched arms of the Pacific goalkeeper for a 1-0 lead in the 50th minute.
  • Less than a minute later, Ross Johnstone stole the ball past midfield and quickly fed Tunbridge up the wing.
  • Tunbridge caught the Pacific goalkeeper off his line and laced a shot from over 25 yards out over the goalkeeper's head and extended the lead to 2-0.
  • Frustration began to set in for the Tigers, who picked up a pair of yellow cards and then gave the Toreros a penalty kick opportunity, when Vicente Ayala drew a foul in the box.
  • Tunbridge stepped up to take the kick and made no mistake, extending the lead to 3-0 in the 60th minute.
  • For good measure, Johnstone found Bahena later in the half, who chested down the pass and fed Oliver Rhoades, who one-timed a pass to Samy Kanaan.
  • Kanaan picked the top-left corner of the net for his sixth goal of the season and extended the lead to 4-0 in the 78th minute.

TORERO TIDBITS
  • Tunbridge is now the first Torero with a 20-point season since Miguel Berry in 2019.
  • With his five-point game, Tunbridge crossed 50 points in his collegiate career.
  • With Bahena crossing 10 points on the season, the Toreros also have three players with 10 or more points for the first time since 2019.
  • San Diego's 24 shots and 13 on goal were the most they've recorded against any team this season.
  • The win gives San Diego a chance to repeat as WCC champions on Friday, Nov. 10.
