LOS ANGELES – The San Diego softball program (0-1, 0-0 WCC) fell 11-0 in five innings in its season opener to California (1-0, 0-0 PAC-12) on Friday afternoon at Smith Field on the campus of Loyola Marymount.

Izzy Owen led the way for the Toreros, going 2-for-3, while
Madison Earnshaw went 4.1 innings of relief, allowing four hits, three earned runs and striking out one.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- California was quick to jump out to a lead with eight runs in the first inning, all of which came with two outs.
- The Golden Bears tallied two home runs in the inning, forcing starter Courtney Rose out of the game early.
- Earnshaw would take over and settle things down, keeping the Golden Bears scoreless for the next three innings.
- The Toreros would threaten multiple times throughout the game, but were unable to break through.
- In the third inning, EJ Joyner and Joecellia Roberts registered back-to-back singles with two outs, but were ultimately left on base.
- Taylor Johnson and Owen were both stranded at second base the next two innings, after each were able to reach.
- However, the Golden Bears were able to preserve a five-inning victory, behind three home runs in the game.

TORERO TIDBITS
- Johnson reached base twice in her collegiate debut, drawing a walk and a hit-by-pitch. She's the first Torero to reach twice in her collegiate debut since Amanda Limon in 2021.
- Owen registered the 100th hit of her collegiate career with two on the day.
- Joyner's hit was the first of her collegiate career.
- Joyner and Johnson each made their first starts as Toreros in the loss.
