Late-Game Rally Earns USD Gritty 5-3 Win Over Nebraska

Rennie, Gonzalez, and Smith shine on mound, Sim and Gurevitch come up big at plate

SAN DIEGO — Key contributions from both newcomers and seasoned veterans alike powered San Diego baseball (2-0, 0-0 WCC) to its second consecutive win on Saturday night, downing Nebraska (0-2, 0-0 Big 10) 5-3 at Fowler Park before a hometown crowd of 1,576.

SIM, SMITH, GUREVITCH STAY HOT
  • After junior centerfielder Dustin Allen reached on a fielder's choice, junior infielder Kevin Sim (Torrey Pines High School) got the scoring started in the bottom of the second by homering for a second straight game, this time launching a fastball to the deepest part of Fowler Park (left-center field) to give USD an early 2-0 lead.
  • The Cornhuskers answered in the top of the fifth with an RBI single, but sophomore two-way player Austin Smith (Granite Hills High School) had an answer an inning later, plating Sim with an opposite-field single of his own through the left side to make it 3-1 in favor of the Toreros.
  • A two-run Nebraska homer in the top of the eighth tied the contest at three before San Diego found a late-game spark for the second evening in a row.
  • Sim began the rally with a one-out walk before moving to second on a sharp grounder to first base from Smith.
  • Junior utility player Angelo Peraza (St. Augustine High School) followed with a walk of his own, then freshman infielder Jack Gurevitch delivered a decisive blow yet again, driving in Sim by slapping an opposite-field single through the left side to push USD back in front at 4-3.
  • Pinch runner Brayden Grantham (freshman) entered in place of Gurevitch at first and promptly stole second, breaking for the bag early enough to spook Cornhuskers reliever Shay Schanaman into spiking a wild pitch, which skipped to the backstop and brought home Peraza for a key insurance run to make it 5-3.
RENNIE, GONZALEZ SHINE, SMITH SHUTS IT DOWN
  • Graduate right-hander Garrett Rennie began Saturday night's game on the mound for the Toreros and turned in a solid start, tossing six innings of one-run ball while striking out seven, walking just one, and scattering six hits.
  • He was relieved in the seventh by freshman Aídan Gonzalez, who preserved a 3-1 USD lead by stranding a pair of runners with two strikeouts and a well-timed ground ball to end the inning.
  • Gonzalez's final line in a gritty college debut: 1.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K.
  • Hard-throwing lefty Austin Smith entered from left field in the top of the ninth to close out the game, earning the Toreros' first save of the season by striking out the side in emphatic fashion to strand a runner at second base and secure his team a 5-3 win.
TORERO TIDBITS
  • Smith, a transfer from UC San Diego, shined both at the plate and on the mound on Saturday, going 1-for-4 with an RBI alongside a scoreless inning pitched with three strikeouts that earned him a save.
  • Graduate transfer infielder James Arakawa (Pacific) led USD with two hits on Saturday, which tied the game-high.
  • Sim homered for the second consecutive night and paced the San Diego offense with three runs scored and two RBIs.
  • Gurevitch was 1-for-3 with an RBI and a walk, marking the second straight night he drove in a key run in the eighth inning after notching a two-RBI double in the eighth inning of Friday's contest.
  • Allen was 1-for-4 with a run scored, and Peraza walked twice and scored once.
