HOW IT HAPPENED – SAN DIEGO 4, UTAH TECH 6
- The Trailblazers used a six-run second inning to build a cushion for the remainder of the game and used six hits to drive them in.
- Needing a response to the early Utah Tech lead, Taylor Johnson singled and Emma Giaime walked to set up Mikalyn Emanuelli. Emanuelli singled to the shortstop to drive home Johnson and score the first run for the Toreros.
- Izzy Owen added another run on an RBI single, but was caught trying to stretch the play into a double, preventing the additional run from scoring before the tag was applied.
- The Toreros continued to generate offense in the third inning, as EJ Joyner recorded an early double to step the table for her side.
- After Joecellia Roberts reached on an error and Arisa Tovar walked, Giaime stepped to the plate and made the Trailblazers pay with a two-run single to cut the lead to 6-4.
- Clareese Santiago re-loaded the bases, but the Toreros would strand all three to end the frame.
- After taking over in the third inning, Courtney Rose turned in a masterful performance, going five shutout innings of relief, while allowing just four hits and striking out four.
- While Rose kept the Toreros in the game, they were unable to break through again, with only one runner reaching scoring position from there on.
