SAN DIEGO – The San Diego women's basketball program (17-12, 11-7 WCC) used a strong offensive attack and 49 points from the graduating senior class to defeat Portland (20-8, 14-3 WCC), 74-58, on Saturday afternoon and senior day at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
Kiera Oakry led the way with 17 points and five assists, while
Myah Pace added 16 points and five assists.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- With third place in the WCC on the line, the Toreros offense came to play, terrorizing the Pilots defense in transition for the entire night.
- San Diego scored 27 points in the opening quarter, matching their largest scoring quarter of the season, which was also done against Portland back in December.
- The Toreros shot 73.3 percent in the quarter, with Kasey Neubert scoring six points to lead the way.
- Jess Finney punctuated the quarter with a three pointer and gave them a 27-19 lead.
- Portland rallied to shave the lead to 33-30 with 4:27 left in the second quarter, but the Toreros answered with an 11-1 run.
- Oakry would cap off a terrific first half by banking in a buzzer-beating three pointer from beyond half court to give San Diego a 47-32 lead.
- San Diego kept the lead consistent throughout the third quarter, as Pace added seven points and the Toreros limited the Pilots to just 29.4 percent from the field.
- Portland opened the fourth quarter with a 9-0 run, forcing the Toreros into an early timeout.
- However, the Toreros were able to grit their teeth and hit some key baskets, as Ayanna Khalfani and Oakry hit key baskets to help put the game on ice.
TORERO TIDBITS
- Pace (1,114) officially passed Kerri Nakamoto for 14th place on the all-time scoring, with 16 points on the night.
- With five assists on the afternoon, Pace (369) also passed Cori Woodward (367) for sixth on the Toreros all-time list. Next up is Nakamoto (376) in fifth.
- Neubert finished with a career-high five steals in the win, good for the most by any Torero this season.
- San Diego finished with four players in double figures for just the third time this season.
