Game Recap: Softball |

Roberts Leads Softball to Win, Draw Against Harvard

SAN DIEGO – The San Diego softball program (9-17-1, 0-0 WCC) took home a win and a draw against Harvard (7-7-1, 0-0 Ivy) behind a walk-off, three run home run from Joecellia Roberts on Tuesday night at the USD Softball Complex.

HOW IT HAPPENED – SAN DIEGO 6, HARVARD 5
  • In a rainy and wet start to the game, the Toreros fell into an early 3-0 hole in the first inning, as Harvard took advantage of some walks.
  • However, San Diego would not go away quietly, as EJ Joyner led off the game with a double down the right field line and Izzy Owen drove her in to shave the deficit to just two runs.
  • While Courtney Rose danced out of trouble in the circle in the next two innings, her offense provided more support for her in the third inning.
  • Owen and Emma Giaime both reached on a walk and single respectively and advanced a base on a wild pitch.
  • Needing a big hit, Roberts stepped to the plate and laced a 3-1 pitch into the right center field gap to score both and tie the game at 3-3.
  • Harvard jumped back in front in the fourth inning and maintained the advantage going into the seventh inning.
  • The Crimson added some insurance in the seventh with an RBI single, but the Toreros had one more opportunity in the bottom half of the frame.
  • Mikalyn Emanuelli led off the inning with a single and with two outs, Taylor Johnson kept the line moving, on a single of her own.
  • Roberts stepped to the plate and launched the second pitch she saw deep over the right field wall to earn a walk-off win over the Crimson.

HOW IT HAPPENED – SAN DIEGO 2, HARVARD 2 (F/8)
  • Game two proved to be a low-scoring pitching duel, as Madison Earnshaw turned in another sensational performance in the circle, throwing her third complete game of the season.
  • The redshirt senior opened up play with three scoreless innings, holding Harvard in check.
  • While the Crimson struck for two runs in the fourth, the Toreros had an answer in the bottom half of the frame.
  • After a Roberts hit-by-pitch and a Giaime single, Ashley Daugherty made the most of her opportunity with runners in scoring position, driving home Roberts with an RBI single.
  • The Toreros kept the pressure up and loaded the bases, setting up Amanda Limon, who tied the game with sacrifice fly.
  • Earnshaw remained composed in the circle and added two more strikeouts to her total over the next three innings and worked around a leadoff single in the seventh inning to keep the game locked at 2-2.
  • As the rain began to fall, the Toreros got a chance to win the game in the bottom of the eighth inning, loading the bases with just one out.
  • However, the Toreros could not strike for a run and with the rain becoming heavier, the game was called as a 2-2 tie at the end of the eighth inning.

TORERO TIDBITS
  • Earnshaw competed in her 100th career game in the circle, becoming the seventh Torero pitcher to ever reach the threshold.
  • With eight innings pitched tonight, Earnshaw moved into the top-10 in total innings pitched at San Diego at 426.0. Next up is Christina Haake (433.2 IP) in ninth.
  • Earnshaw also broke her tie for seventh with Jade Quentin with her 71st start as a Torero. Earnshaw is two away from Andrea Marino (73) in sixth.
  • The five RBI in game one by Roberts is a new career-high and the most by a Torero since Noelle Hee had five against Saint Mary's on Apr. 9, 2022.
  • Tuesday's tie is the first by the program since entering Division I in 1986.
  • Emanuelli is on a torrid pace over her last three games, hitting .727 (8-for-11) with an RBI, three runs scored and four stolen bases.
  • Limon matched a single season career-high with her 10th RBI of the season.
