SAN DIEGO – In day two of the Ed Collins Spring Classic, the No. 34 University of San Diego men's tennis team defeated No. 25 Memphis, 4-1.
 
The Toreros earned the doubles point with 6-3 wins at No. 1 (Iiro Vasa/Sacchitt Sharrma) and No. 2 (Marvin Schaber/Lambert Ruland).
 
The freshman Ruland extended USD's lead to 2-0 with a 6-3, 7-5 win at No. 6 singles. After Memphis cut the deficit with a win at No. 5, redshirt junior Marvin Schaber made it 3-1 with a 6-3, 6-4 victory at No. 4.
 
Sophomore Iiro Vasa clinched the match with a 7-5, 7-5 margin over No. 48 Pablo Alemany.
 
"Memphis is a very tough team who competes and battles at every spot," said head coach Ryan Keckley. "This was a very good win for this program after yesterday's let down. We played within ourselves and stuck to our team identity throughout the course of the match. I thought we did an excellent job of creating the energy from the beginning which helped us secure the doubles point. Iiro and Sacchitt played some disciplined doubles which gave us the edge heading into singles. I'm really proud of Lambert Ruland for stepping up today in both doubles and singles.  We have been fortunate to be healthy all year long, but we have been preaching to each player not seeing starting time that their time will come.  Today was that day for Lambert and he seized the opportunity."
 
San Diego improves to 11-5, and will face #35 Tulane tomorrow morning.
