Big Bats, Big Start from Rennie Power Toreros Past Santa Clara

San Diego hammers four homers as Rennie dominates on the mound in 10-6 win to even series at Schott Stadium

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Four home runs and a masterful start on the mound from Garrett Rennie powered San Diego baseball (9-11, 3-2 WCC) to a 10-6 win over Santa Clara (12-6, 3-2 WCC) on Saturday afternoon at Stephen Schott Stadium, evening USD's series with the Broncos at one game apiece.

Kevin Sim (Torrey Pines High School) led the way with a pair of home runs, while Angelo Peraza (St. Augustine High School) and Austin Smith (UC San Diego, Granite Hills High School) each went yard once.

Rennie set forth his most dominant start of 2023 thus far, allowing just a single run on three hits across a season-high seven innings pitched while striking out four and walking just two.

POWER SURGE
  • Sim (junior utility player) got the scoring started in the top of the second, plating Peraza and Smith with a three-run shot to right-center that marked an effortless display of opposite-field power.
  • Junior centerfielder Dustin Allen stayed hot and drove in a pair an inning later, bringing home Peraza and Smith with a two-RBI double off the left-field wall to make it 5-0 in favor of the Toreros.
  • Peraza made it three straight innings in which USD  in the top of the fourth when he shot an RBI single through the left side, plating sophomore shortstop Justin DeCriscio to give San Diego a 6-0 lead.
  • The Toreros then added a quartet of insurance runs in powerful fashion in the top of the sixth, establishing a 10-0 lead on back-to-back-to-back home runs after Smith (two-run, right-center), Peraza (solo, left-center), and Sim (solo, over the left-field wall and batting cage) left the yard.
  • Santa Clara pushed across six runs in Saturday's final four innings but got no closer, earning USD a decisive 10-6 win over the Broncos at Stephen Schott Stadium in which it never trailed.
TORERO TIDBITS
  • Peraza paced the San Diego offense with a 3-for-4 afternoon, driving in a pair of runs on a solo shot and a single while coming around to score a tied-for-game-high three runs and drawing two walks.
