Sunday Finale Slips Away at Santa Clara

San Diego falls 9-7 to Broncos in 11 innings at Stephen Schott Stadium

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — San Diego baseball (9-12, 3-3 WCC) completed a pair of valiant comebacks on Sunday afternoon but could not hang on to secure a series win at Santa Clara, suffering a tough 9-7 extra-innings loss after the Broncos (13-6, 4-2 WCC) plated three in the bottom of the 11th on a walk-off home run.

USD erased an early four-run deficit to pull ahead 6-4, then scored once in the top of the 11th to retake the lead at 7-6. The Toreros came within one out of securing the win in the bottom of the ninth, and were two outs away from victory in the bottom of the 11th.

Every player in the San Diego starting lineup recorded at least one hit.

GRITTY OFFENSIVE EFFORT NOT ENOUGH
  • After Santa Clara got the scoring started by plating four runs in the bottom of the third, freshman infielder/designated hitter Jack Gurevitch and junior centerfielder Dustin Allen provided an immediate answer for USD in the top of the fourth with an RBI single and RBI double, cutting the deficit to two runs at 4-2.
  • The Toreros continued their scoring in the top of the fifth, plating four runs on a two-RBI single from sophomore outfielder/left-handed pitcher Austin Smith, an RBI single from Gurevitch, and a wild pitch, which brought home junior utility player Angelo Peraza from third to give San Diego a 6-4 lead.
  • Santa Clara got a run back in the bottom of the sixth on a sacrifice fly to make it a 6-5 game, then tied the score at six in the bottom of the ninth on a two-out solo home run, sending the contest to extra innings.
  • Both teams traded zeros in a scoreless 10th before Peraza delivered a two-strike, two-out RBI double in the top of the 11th, scoring sophomore shortstop Justin DeCriscio from second to give USD its lead back at 7-6.
  • Redshirt sophomore right-hander Drake Frize allowed a leadoff single to open up the bottom of the 11th, then got the first out of the inning on a fly ball to center field.
  • With a runner on first and one out, Broncos first baseman Robert Hipwell slapped a bouncing ground ball back to Frize, who gloved it cleanly before he attempted to nab the lead runner at second and initiate a double play.
  • His throw sailed high into center field, putting runners on the corners before Santa Clara hit a walk-off three-run homer in its next at-bat, dealing USD a 9-7 loss to the Broncos in extra innings at Stephen Schott Stadium.
SMITH SHINES, ROBINSON GIVES IT HIS ALL
  • Redshirt sophomore righty Ryan Kysar started Sunday's game on the mound for USD and surrendered four runs on five hits across two innings.
  • Smith (UC San Diego, Granite Hills High School) — who began the contest as the designated hitter — was first out of the bullpen for San Diego and set forth three strong innings, allowing just a single run on five hits while walking none and striking out three.
  • Redshirt junior righty Ryan Robinson entered in the bottom of the sixth and held Santa Clara to one run on two hits, striking out three and walking only one across a career-high four innings.
TORERO TIDBITS
  • Graduate transfer infielder James Arakawa (2-for-5), DeCriscio (2-for-4), Peraza (2-for-6), and Gurevitch (2-for-3) all recorded a pair of hits on Sunday afternoon.
  • Arakawa (Pacific) walked and scored once, DeCriscio scored twice, Peraza scored once and drove in a run, and Gurevitch scored once, drove in two runs, and drew a walk.
  • Sunday afternoon marked DeCriscio's third consecutive two-hit game and extended his hit streak to eight games. He leads the Toreros with a .358 (29-for-81) batting average and has hit safely in 19 of San Diego's 22 games so far in 2023.
  • Gurevitch extended his hit streak to four games and his walk streak to eight games.
  • Smith was 1-for-5 with two runs scored, two RBIs, and a walk.
  • Allen was 1-for-4 with a walk and an opposite-field RBI double that hit high off the left field wall.
  • Sunday marked the second consecutive game in which Allen has hit an RBI double off the outfield wall. After notching two hits on Monday (March 20) at California Baptist and one in each game at Santa Clara, he enters next week's action on a season-high four-game hit streak.
  • Graduate transfer catcher Andrew Semo (Fordham, The Bishop's School) was 1-for-3 and got hit by a pitch.
  • Sophomore catcher Ariel Armas (St. Augustine High School) entered as a defensive replacement in the bottom of the eighth and hammered a booming two-out double off the center field wall in the top of the 10th in what marked his lone at-bat on Sunday, giving him hits in back-to-back games for the first time this season.
  • Junior utility player Kevin Sim (Torrey Pines High School) was 1-for-5 and drew a walk.
  • Robinson's outing on Sunday was the longest of his USD career, surpassing his previous career-high of three innings that he set forth on February 19 versus Nebraska.
  • San Diego held a lead in all three games at Santa Clara this weekend.
  • USD has been ahead at some point in 18 of its 22 games so far this season.
