PHOENIX, Ariz. – The San Diego softball program (6-16, 0-0 WCC) turned in a strong effort but fell in a tight, 4-3, decision at Grand Canyon (21-2, 0-0 WAC), on Tuesday night at the GCU Softball Stadium.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
- San Diego opened the game quickly, as Izzy Owen led off with a single and Mikalyn Emanuelli reached on a fielder's choice.
- Joecellia Roberts was able to get both of them home on a hot shot to second base that was mishandled, making it 2-0.
- After two strikeouts by Courtney Rose in the opening inning, the Toreros added more runs to support her in the next inning.
- Emma Giaime took a 1-2 pitch out of the park for her first collegiate home run to extend the lead to 3-0.
- The Antelopes slowly chipped their way back into the game, despite a terrific outing from Rose in the circle. Â
- A solo home run in the second inning made it 3-1 and another run came home in the fourth inning to make it 3-2.
- The Toreros nearly added more runs in the fifth inning, as Emanuelli worked her way to third base, but was stranded there.
- After Grand Canyon added a run in the fifth inning with a sacrifice fly, the Toreros loaded the bases with one out in the sixth.
- Owen ripped a ball directly at the pitcher, taking a deflection towards the plate that allowed for a force out at home. The Toreros were unable to drive in the run with their next chance at the plate.
- Grand Canyon was able to jump ahead in the sixth inning with an infield single and hung on, despite allowing a baserunner in the seventh inning,
