Game Recap: Softball |

Late Game Heroics Power Softball to Saturday Split

TUCSON, Ariz. – The San Diego softball program (14-21-1, 0-0 WCC) earned a split to wrap up the Bear Down Fiesta, defeating Georgetown (8-22, 3-6 Big East), 4-3, before falling to No. 20 Arizona (23-12, 3-6 PAC-12), 10-0 on Saturday afternoon at Hillenbrand Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED – SAN DIEGO 4, GEORGETOWN 3
  • Much like the opener on Friday, the Toreros fell in an early 3-0 hole in the first inning. However, the Toreros would not let the start shake them and settled into the game from there.
  • Starting pitcher Emma Giaime built the momentum back quickly, getting some help from her defense with a caught stealing by Arisa Tovar and a double play generated by Izzy Owen.
  • After two outs in the fourth inning, the offense finally clicked for the Toreros.
  • Taylor Johnson and Tovar registered back-to-back singles to set up Giaime.
  • The freshman worked the count to 2-2, before launching a towering blast over the right center field wall to tie the game at 3-3.
  • The Toreros nearly struck again in the fifth, as Owen and Mikalyn Emanuelli each singled and Johnson drew a hit-by-pitch. However, Georgetown would escape unscathed.
  • Needing a spark in the seventh inning, Clareese Santiago opened the game with a pinch hit single and Emanuelli used her speed to reach and move Santiago to third on an error.
  • Johnson got an opportunity and made the most of it, singling to center field on the first pitch she saw to give the Toreros the lead for good.
  • After Georgetown got two singles in the bottom of the seventh, Giaime was able to induce another ground ball out to secure the complete game victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED – SAN DIEGO 0, #20 ARIZONA 10 (F/5)
  • The Wildcats would open the game with three runs in the opening frame as well, but the Toreros were able to hang in there and eliminate further damage the next few innings.
  • On offense, the Toreros struggled to get anything going, despite the best effort of Emanuelli, who created promise in the fourth with a single.
  • Emanuelli would make her way to second after a Johnson walk, but the Wildcats escaped the scoring position opportunity.
  • The game would swing in the Wildcats favor in the fifth inning, as the hosts were able to strike for seven runs to earn the win in five innings.

TORERO TIDBITS
  • Emanuelli extended her on-base streak to 13 consecutive games with three hits across two games.
  • With Giaime's home run, all nine of the home runs hit by the Toreros this season have come from sophomores or younger. Freshmen have compiled five of those nine home runs for this season.
  • Both of Giaime's career home runs have come in the state of Arizona, with her first happening at Grand Canyon several weeks ago.
  • Johnson was hit by her team-leading 12th pitch of the season, and the Toreros as a group have drawn 30 hit-by-pitches, good for the most in a single season since 2015-16.

UP NEXT
The Toreros will return to play next weekend, opening up WCC action with a three-game set at Saint Mary's. The weekend will open with a doubleheader on Friday, Apr. 7 at 12 p.m., and 2:30 p.m.
