SAN DIEGO — San Diego baseball (14-17-1, 7-6 WCC) on Friday night pulled ahead for an early lead after erasing a four-run deficit but could not hang on to secure the victory, dropping a close 8-7 decision to Portland (18-15, 8-5 WCC) at Fowler Park.
FURIOUS COMEBACK FALLS SHORT
- After the Pilots struck first for four runs in the top of the first inning, the Toreros provided an instant answer, hitting back with five runs in the bottom of the frame on a sacrifice fly from Angelo Peraza, a RBI single from Jack Gurevitch, and a towering two-run homer from Will Worthington to take a 5-4 lead.
- Portland pulled ahead on a two-run homer in the top of the second before Peraza came up clutch again, tying the score at six with an RBI single back up the middle.
- The Pilots broke the tie with a solo homer in the top of the third to make it 7-6 in their favor, then made it a two-run lead at 8-6 on an RBI double in the top of the fourth.
- Justin DeCriscio brought San Diego back within a run in the bottom of the sixth with a sacrifice fly but USD got no closer, falling to Portland by an 8-7 margin on Friday night at Fowler Park.
KYSAR, ROBINSON SHINE ON MOUND
- After the Pilots scored eight runs across the game's first four frames, right-handed pitchers Ryan Kysar and Ryan Robinson restored order on the mound, combining for five scoreless frames out of the bullpen.
- Kysar tossed 4.1 innings, working around four walks and two hits by tying his season-high with five strikeouts.
- Robinson relieved Kysar with runners on first and second and one out in the top of the ninth and quickly extinguished the Pilots' rally on a fielder's choice and a strikeout, keeping the Torero deficit at just one run as they headed to the bottom of the ninth.
TORERO TIDBITS
- Peraza, Gurevitch, and Worthington all recorded two RBIs on Friday night.
- Gurevitch was 2-for-3 with a run scored and was the only Torero to notch multiple hits.
- Each USD run on Friday was scored by a different player.
- Peraza, Sim, and Ariel Armas all drew a walk on Friday.
- Each of San Diego's last three losses have been decided by one run.
