SAN DIEGO – The San Diego track & field program recorded a highly successful opening day at the Beach Invitational, led by several standout performances on Friday.
"We had a great finish in first place in the [3000m] steeplechase from
Daniella Hubble", said head coach
Will Guarino. "I was proud of how smart she ran that race, showing her efficiency as well as the technical aspects and just running with heart."
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Toreros opened the day with the 5000m, with Aryam Jaimes once again leading the Toreros pack with a time of 18:32.94 to finish 18th.
- Freshman Stella Smith also shined, smashing her previous best 5000m time by over 30 seconds to finish 23rd.
- Smith finished with a time of 18:55.18, breaking 19 minutes for the first time in her collegiate career.
- Later in the day, Daniella Hubble made waves in the 3000m steeplechase.
- Hubble won her second 3000m steeplechase of the season, rolling with a personal best time of 11:02.22.
- The sophomore's time would check in as the 62nd fastest in the NCAA West Region entering today's action and crushed her previous best mark.
- The men's side also made an impact, as Jake Coleman turned in a record-setting showing in the 10,000m.
- Coleman broke Ethan Steiner's school record by over 12 seconds, with a blistering time of 31:08.31 to finish sixth overall.
QUOTES
"I started off the first half of the race and I was behind another girl and I stuck with her, but with about 1,000 meters to go, I made a move and took the lead to finish strong," said Hubble. "It meant a lot because this was the first time I ran a personal best this season after having some health obstacles earlier on, so it meant a lot to me to be back."
"It feels good," said Coleman. "I really wanted it from cross country and with the training I had, I felt like I was able to hit it. I was happy with my splits. They were solid and like two seconds between by slowest and my fastest except for the last lap, so I was happy with that.
"I thought it was great to see Jake break the school record today in the 10,000m", said Guarino. "He ran a smart, strategic race and it was great to see a sophomore take down a school record that was set two years ago by
Ethan Steiner."
