NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – The San Diego softball program (19-23-1, 4-2 WCC) rode a brilliant performance in the circle from
Emma Giaime and timely hitting to a 4-0 win at CSUN (17-20, 8-7 Big West) on Wednesday afternoon at Matador Diamond.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both pitchers in Wednesday's contest came out of the gate quickly, as Giaime got the start for San Diego.
- The freshman commanded the game from the start, securing eight groundball outs in her first four innings, while allowing just two hits and striking out two.
- The Toreros were also limited to two hits through the first four innings, but managed to break through in the fifth.
- Joecellia Roberts started the inning off with a walk and Amanda Limon singled to set up Izzy Owen.
- The team-leader in hits came through once again, roping a ball down the first base line off the first base bag and over the Matador first baseman to score Roberts and take a 1-0 lead.
- Mikalyn Emanuelli kept the inning going with a perfectly placed single of her own, dropping a ball just over the outstretched third baseman that trickled into left field and scored Limon for a 2-0 lead.
- Giaime got right back to work in the circle, inducing three more groundouts in the fifth and finished with 13 in the game.
- Needing some insurance, the Toreros struck in the seventh inning, as EJ Joyner led off the frame with a double.
- Emanuelli singled and promptly stole second base to set up Alexia Torculas with two runners in scoring position.
- Torculas laced a single to left field to score both runners, but was tagged out attempting to stretch it to a double to end the inning.
- With a 4-0 lead in hand, Giaime rolled through all three Matadors and finished off a 98-pitch shutout.

- Emanuelli improved to 12-for-12 on stolen bases this season, giving her the most by a Torero since Torculas in 2021.
- Her 12 straight stolen bases are the longest streak to start a season since Taylor Spence recorded her first 13 during the 2018 season. Â
- Giaime is now the first freshman pitcher with multiple solo shutouts in a season for the Toreros since Paige von Sprecken in 2015.
