MORAGA, Calif. – The San Diego softball program (15-23-1, 1-2 WCC) finished off their series at Saint Mary's (11-17, 2-1 WCC) with a split of a doubleheader, winning game one 7-0 and falling in game two, 2-0, on Saturday at Cottrell Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED – SAN DIEGO 7, SAINT MARY'S 0
- After a scoreless opening inning, the Toreros offense clicked in the next frame.
- Emma Giaime led off the second with a double and Arisa Tovar followed it up with a single.
- The Toreros earned their first run of the game after EJ Joyner loaded the bases, with Giaime scoring on a fielding error by the Gaels to make it 1-0.
- Izzy Owen was able to break the inning open with a two-run single and the Toreros finished the inning up 3-0.
- Madison Earnshaw would give the Toreros everything they needed from there, commanding the circle and allowing just three hits all game.
- Earnshaw flew through each inning at an economical pace and would stand at just 60 pitches through the first six scoreless frames.
- Meanwhile, Amanda Limon led off the fifth inning with a single and Joecellia Roberts cleared the bases with a home run down the right field line for a 5-0 lead.
- Alexia Torculas opened the sixth inning with her first hit of the season following her return from injury.
- The play sparked two more runs for the Toreros, as Owen polished off a career day with a two-run double to make it 7-0.
- Earnshaw would finish off the shutout with a pair of strikeouts, to end with six on the day.
HOW IT HAPPENED – SAN DIEGO 0, SAINT MARY'S 2
- Game two was a much more deliberate affair, with both teams managing just one hit apiece through the first two innings.
- Nevertheless, the Gaels were able to secure a run on a sacrifice fly following a Toreros error to make it 1-0.
- The Gaels would add another run in the third inning to take a 2-0 lead.
- However, the Toreros would get some needed lockdown innings in the circle from Courtney Rose, who stepped in beginning in the fourth inning and went on to go three scoreless frames.
- Clareese Santiago and Giaime would give the Toreros a chance to recover late in the game, with a single each, but were each left stranded on the basepaths.
TORERO TIDBITS
- Earnshaw recorded her 300th collegiate strikeout to seal the win over Saint Mary's in the opener.
- Earnshaw also recorded the 30th complete game of her career.
- Mikalyn Emanuelli's on-base streak came to an end at 14 consecutive games in game one, despite registering a hit in game two.
- Owen tied a career-high with four RBI in the win over Saint Mary's. The redshirt senior continues to extend her career season with 18 RBI and nine doubles.
- With her fourth home run of the season, Roberts became the first Torero sophomore or younger to hit four home runs in a season since Lauren Kane in 2016-17.

The Toreros will continue WCC action with three games at the USD Softball Complex against Pacific, beginning Saturday with a doubleheader at 12 p.m., and 2:30 p.m. Wednesday's previously scheduled game against California Baptist has been canceled.
