Men’s Soccer Adds Matteo Gasperoni to Transfer Class

SAN DIEGO – The San Diego men's soccer program welcomes another addition to the program for the 2023 season, adding Matteo Gasperoni as a graduate transfer.

"A fantastic pickup for us," said head coach Brian Quinn. "Matteo is an established player who brings quality, tenacity and a high soccer IQ to our team. We expect him to be one of our leaders from the start. His maturity and passion will help be a driving force for the team,"

Gasperoni heads to San Diego following two seasons at Florida International, following time spent overseas in his home nation of Italy. A native of Cesena, Italy, Gasperoni played in 37 games at FIU, recording three goals and an assist for seven points and tallying 2,608 minutes in his defensive midfield position.

A team captain for the Panthers, Gasperoni turned in a highly successful tenure in Miami, being a part of 26 wins and two NCAA Tournament appearances. Gasperoni was named a 2021 All-C-USA First Team honoree and a 2021 United Soccer Coaches Third Team All-Southeast Region award winner.

Gasperoni saved some of his best performances for the big stage, by being named to the 2021 C-USA All-Tournament Team and scoring in the Panthers' 2021 NCAA Tournament game against Wake Forest.

Gasperoni was also named to the All-American Athletic Conference Preseason Team in 2022 and was named a CoSIDA Academic All-District Team honoree in the same year, holding down a GPA of 3.89.

Gasperoni joins fellow transfer Denis Kelmendi (Falkenberg, Sweden/Seton Hall) as additions for the 2023 season.
