SAN DIEGO — Four Toreros recorded multiple hits on Thursday night, but 10 early Cougar runs dealt San Diego baseball (20-22-1, 13-9 WCC) a tough 10-6 defeat to BYU (19-24, 9-10 WCC) in the teams' series opener at Fowler Park.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Cougars struck for four early runs in the top of the first, doing so via a solo home run, a two-RBI double, and a sacrifice fly.
- In the bottom of the second, reigning WCC Player of the Week Will Worthington got USD on the board with an RBI groundout, cutting the deficit to 4-1.
- BYU added on with six runs in the top of the third (three RBI singles and a three-run homer) before the Toreros notched another run in the bottom of the frame on an RBI groundout from James Arakawa.
- Gabe D'Arcy kept the San Diego comeback efforts moving in the bottom of the sixth, ripping a two-RBI single through the left side to move the score to 10-4 in what marked his first career game at Fowler Park.
- Worthington stayed hot with a two-RBI double in the bottom of the seventh to pull the Toreros within four at 10-6 but they got no closer, suffering a defeat to the Cougars by the same score on Thursday night.
ON THE MOUND
- Garrett Rennie started Thursday night's game on the mound for San Diego and turned in two innings while allowing five runs on seven hits.
- He was followed by Tristan LaMaison, who surrendered five runs on five hits.
- Aídan Gonzalez, Mikiah Negrete, and Nick Suspenzi were next out of the bullpen and held BYU scoreless with one inning of relief apiece.
- James Sashin bridged the gap to the ninth with a pair of scoreless frames before Drake Frize struck out two to set the Cougars down in order in their final three at-bats.
TORERO TIDBITS
- James Arakawa, Jack Gurevitch, Gabe D'Arcy, and Will Worthington all had two hits on Thursday.
- Worthington paced the San Diego offense with three RBIs, and Arakawa led USD with two runs scored.
- Austin Smith did not record a hit but drew a team-high two walks.
- Worthington is 7-for-12 (.583) in his last three games with eight RBIs, two homers, two doubles, and three runs scored.
- D'Arcy — who made his college debut last Friday at LMU — has:
- Multiple hits in back-to-back games
- Hits in three of his first four games in 2023
- Reached base in each of his first four college games
- LaMaison, Sashin, and Frize all notched two strikeouts on Thursday.
