Four Toreros Earn WCC Baseball All-Academic Honors

Peraza selected to WCC All-Academic Team, Costello, Sashin and Worthington earn Honorable Mentions

SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — Angelo Peraza was named to the 2023 WCC Baseball All-Academic Team and three other Toreros earned WCC All-Academic Honorable Mentions, the West Coast Conference announced on Wednesday afternoon.

Athletes were eligible for selection by maintaining at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average while also being a significant contributor to his team and being in at least their second year at their school.

Peraza, a junior utility player who is majoring in Real Estate, earned a spot on the WCC All-Academic Team with a 3.68 GPA. He led USD in hits (59), batting average (.328), multi-hit games (17), and outfield assists (11) in 2023.

The Chula Vista, California native started 45 games in right field, two in center field, and one at catcher in 2023 and notched three go-ahead hits in the ninth inning or later this year. He concluded the 2023 season on a team-high 30-game reached-base streak.

He was selected to the 2023 All-WCC First Team last month and earned a WCC All-Academic Honorable Mention in 2022.

Costello, a junior utility player who is majoring in Communication Studies, earned a WCC All-Academic Honorable Mention with a 3.36 GPA. He remained one of the WCC's most fearsome hitters in 2023 despite missing 18 of USD's last 19 games due to injury, hitting five home runs across three games at Fowler Park from February 20 to February 26, including two homers in back-to-back contests against both Nebraska (February 20) and Hawaii (February 24) and one more on February 26 opposite UNLV. Costello returned for USD's WCC Tournament game against Saint Mary's on May 25 and went 1-for-2 with a pair of RBIs.

After being named to the 2023 All-WCC Preseason Team, the Simi Valley, California was named both the NCAA National and the West Coast Conference Player of the Week on February 27. He has now earned a WCC All-Academic Honorable Mention in back-to-back seasons (2023 and 2022).

Sashin, a graduate right-handed pitcher who is pursuing a master's degree in Leadership Studies, earned a WCC All-Academic Honorable mention with a 3.67 GPA. The Oak Bluffs, Massachusetts native appeared in 17 games for the Toreros on the mound in 2023, including nine starts. He led USD with 58.2 total innings pitched and posted a 4.45 ERA, striking out 51 batters as he notched two wins. On March 10, he held No. 10 TCU to only one earned run across six strong innings in Fort Worth as he pitched San Diego to its biggest non-conference win of 2023.

Worthington, a junior infielder majoring in Business Administration, earned a WCC All-Academic Honorable Mention with a 3.75 GPA. The Phoenix, Arizona native appeared in 45 of the Toreros' 50 games in 2023, including 29 starts. He batted .273 (21-for-76) in WCC play with 12 runs scored, four doubles, four home runs, and 24 RBIs, which were tied for the second-most on the USD roster in that span. Worthington, who earned his first career WCC Player of the Week honor on May 1, was also selected as a WCC All-Academic Honorable Mention in 2022.
