Pitching Stays Solid, Bats Can't Come Alive in Loss to Waves

San Diego drops narrow 3-0 decision to Pepperdine at Eddy D. Field Stadium on Saturday afternoon

MALIBU, Calif. — San Diego baseball was unable to replicate its performance from Friday, only mustering two hits in a 3-0 loss Saturday against Pepperdine at Eddy D. Field Stadium.

The Toreros (9-16, 2-3 WCC) had their chances early. In the first, Gabe Springer and CJ Moran opened the game with a hit by a pitch and a single. However, USD was unable to get that key hit and punch first.

In the second inning, Cade Martinez recorded a two-out double before being stranded. Pepperdine (7-19, 3-2 WCC) then sent down the next 15 batters before Aden Howard worked a two-out walk in the seventh inning.

Fernando Palencia got the start for the Toreros. He went 3.1 innings, allowing five hits, two runs two walks, while striking out two. Both runs came in the third inning on a two-run homer by Pepperdine's Trey Dunn.

Nate DeSchryver closed out the fourth and worked until the sixth. He did not allow a run in 2.2 innings of work while scattering a hit and getting two strikeouts in the process.

Logan Piper and Caleb Sebek worked the final two innings as the latter worked a scoreless eighth while inducing a couple of punchouts.

NOTABLE
  • With a hit by pitch in the first inning, Springer now has 19 hit by pitches this season, retaking the top spot for HBPs in 2026 nationally
  • Martinez recorded his third double of the season and extended his hitting streak to seven games
  • DeSchryver recorded a season-best 2.2 innings pitched and did not allow a run, marking his first scoreless outing since having three straight scoreless appearances across the Toreros' first two games against Oregon State (March 13 and 14) and the first game of the Gonzaga series (March 20).
  • Sebek, who was coming off a career-high six strikeouts in 2.2 innings on Tuesday against CSUF, logged his second consecutive scoreless outing and his fourth of 2026. It is also his third straight appearance with at least two strikeouts.
