Chris Murphy Called Up By Boston Red Sox

Left-hander pitched at USD from 2017 to 2019

BOSTON — Former Torero Chris Murphy has been recalled by the Boston Red Sox from Triple-A Worcester and is set to make his MLB debut, the organization announced on Tuesday.

Murphy, a left-handed pitcher for San Diego baseball from 2017 to 2019, has posted a 16-20 record and a 4.36 ERA across four professional seasons after being selected by the Red Sox in the sixth round of the 2019 MLB Draft (197th overall pick).

He finished his USD career in 2019 as a junior by posting a 3.50 ERA and a 4-3 record, collecting a team-high 87 strikeouts in 64.1 innings of work before earning an All-West Coast Conference Honorable Mention.

Murphy becomes the sixth Torero on a MLB roster in 2023, joining Riley Adams (Washington Nationals), Dylan Covey (Philadelphia Phillies), Connor Joe (Pittsburgh Pirates), Paul Sewald (Seattle Mariners), and Kris Bryant (Colorado Rockies).
