PHOENIX, Ariz.– Despite outshooting their opponent, the No. 22 San Diego men's soccer program (5-2-1, 0-0-0 WCC) suffered a 1-0 setback to Grand Canyon (4-3-0, 0-0-0 WAC) on Saturday night at GCU Stadium.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Lopes were the first team to strike, scoring in the eighth minute and were ultimately able to hang on to the lead for the remainder of the game.
- Despite this, both sides played to a fairly even first half, with GCU holding the edge in shots.
- The second half got off a torrid start for the Toreros, who appeared poised to equalize at any moment.
- Less than a minute into the period, Steven Ramirez drew a penalty kick, but Mason Tunbridge's attempt went over the crossbar to preserve the Grand Canyon lead.
- Just seconds later, the Toreros nearly had another chance, as Ramirez was fed a golden opportunity by Tunbridge, but his shot rang off the crossbar and the rebound by Rhys Gourdie went wide.
- In the 52nd minute, Gourdie had another opportunity in tight, but the Lopes goalkeeper made a save moving to his right.
- Despite ultimately outshooting the Lopes 13-3 in the second half, the equalizer would not go.
TORERO TIDBITS
- Donovan Parisian made three saves in net, playing in his home state for the first time as a collegian.
