LOS ANGELES – The San Diego women's basketball program (4-15, 0-6 WCC) entered the fourth quarter tied, but could not hang on, falling to LMU (8-10, 3-3 WCC) 67-60, on Saturday afternoon at the Gersten Pavilion.
Kasey Neubert led the Toreros with 16 points and 10 rebounds, while
Veronica Sheffey added 15 points and five assists.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both teams started the first half with hot shooting, as the Toreros shot 59.1 percent from the field.
- Harsimran Kaur started the game quickly with six points in the first quarter and gave San Diego a 12-8 lead with 3:39 left in the first.
- The Toreos would lead by just one after the first quarter, but LMU would answer with a 10-0 run to open the second quarter and take a 25-16 lead.
- Nevertheless, San Diego answered with an 11-4 run after a timeout, helping to shift the momentum before the half with just 3:56 remaining.
- Neubert and Kylie Horstmeyer were the catalysts of the run, as the Toreros would only trail by four at halftime.
- The Toreros would chip away at the LMU advantage in the second, before capturing some life midway through the third quarter.
- After LMU took a 46-41 lead, the Toreros increased their offensive and defensive intensity with a 9-2 run behind a three-pointer from Sheffey and a transition layup from Horton.
- LMU would tie the game before the end of the third quarter, but it proved to be the start of an 8-0 run to reestablish their advantage.
- The Lions lead would balloon to 13 points and prove to be enough, despite six late points from the Toreros to cut the lead back to seven.
TORERO TIDBITS
- San Diego made a season-high 19 free throws against the Lions.
- Neubert recorded her eighth double-double of the season in the defeat,
- Horton passed 900 career points in the loss and now sits at 905.
