Toreros Rout Red Foxes on Homecoming Weekend

San Diego remains undefeated at home with 34-6 victory over Marist

SAN DIEGO — San Diego football (4-2, 2-1 PFL) put together a dominating performance over Marist (0-7, 0-4 PFL) on Saturday afternoon as it utilized an early pick-six, three passing touchdowns, and a pair of field goals to rout the Red Foxes 34-6 in front of a lively crowd of 3,017 at Torero stadium on Homecoming and Family Weekend at USD.

Eric Haney secured a 46-yard pick six on the first drive of the game to start the scoring for San Diego on Saturday afternoon, adding an extra defensive touchdown for the Toreros, who now lead the FCS in pick-sixes, as well as leading all of D-I football in defensive touchdowns.

Grant Sergent commanded the USD offense, throwing three passing touchdowns for a total of 202 passing yards. Two of those touchdown passes were hauled in by Ja'seem Reed, who had a monster performance out wide for San Diego, earning 162 total yards on eight completions — two of which ended in touchdowns — to give him an average of 20.3 yards per completion.

Haney led the way for the Toreros defensively with four total tackles (two solo), one sack, one pass breakup, and a 46-yard pick-six. Giovanni Iovino also had a strong performance on the defensive side for USD, as he earned a team-high six tackles (four solo), one tackle for loss, and one pass breakup.

With the victory, San Diego remains undefeated at home after closing out a two-game homestand with a pair of wins to move to 4-2 overall, and 2-1 in PFL play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Toreros picked up right where they left off last game as Haney jumped a pass from the Marist quarterback on the first drive of the game and took it all the way to the house for a 46-yard pick-six to give San Diego an early 7-0 lead.
  • After the USD defense forced a turnover on downs, Sergent kept the momentum going for the Toreros by finding Reed for a 21-yard touchdown pass up the middle to extend San Diego's lead to 14-0 with 4:56 left in the first quarter.
  • Both teams were scoreless in the second quarter to end the first half of play with the score still 14-0 in favor of the home team.
  • An 11-yard rush from Isaiah Smith in the first drive of the third quarter led to a 52-yard field goal from Aidan Lehman to inflate the Torero lead to 17-0.
  • Marist scored a touchdown with six minutes left in the third quarter before Sergent and Reed responded by connecting again for an 18-yard touchdown pass to make the score 24-6 as the third period of play came to a close.
  • Sergent found Josh Heverly in the fourth quarter for his third touchdown pass of the day, moving the score to 31-6 with 12:04 left in the game.
  • Lehman closed out the win for USD by knocking down a 25-yard field goal to tack on an extra three points for San Diego as it finished the game with a final score of 34-6.
