STOCKTON, Calif. – San Diego Women's Soccer collected its first WCC win in the
Greg LaPorte era, coming back against Pacific with two late goals in the final 20 minutes to win 2-1.
"Two big goals from a freshman and sophomore tonight show the direction this program is going," LaPorte said. "Going down a goal was a real test of character, but was so proud of the way the players responded and kept pushing and fighting. It was a testament of how we stayed focused and played our game."
For USD, not only is it their first WCC victory with LaPorte, but also the first conference win for the program in over three years; last on Oct. 15, 2021. The team also reaches the three-win mark for the first time since the 2021 season.
San Diego out shot Pacific 15-10, 8-3 on target. Abrenica led the way, putting three of her four shots on target.
How it Happened
After a scoreless first half that saw neither side provide any real threat, it was the Tigers that drew first blood in the second half. In the 57
th minute, Pacific's Alexis Pashales scored on a header.
The Toreros stayed in the game, and in the 70
th minute, sophomore midfielder
Mikayla Abrenica put the ball on her right foot on the right border of the 18-yard box, and rifled the ball into the top left triangle on the frame to even the score. Substitute junior defender
Ashley Wright was credited with the assist.
San Diego kept it's foot on the gas and in the 81
st minute, graduate student defender
Molly Quarry whipped in a cross that was headed on backwards by grad
Katie Baxter. Freshman defender
Ella Callanan was trailing the play and hit it first time with her left foot into the back of the net.
The Toreros held on in the final nine minutes of the match to secure the conference victory.
