SAN DIEGO — In the team's second game of conference play, the San Diego women's basketball (4-7, 0-2 WCC) could not hang on against Gonzaga on Saturday afternoon, dropping a 66-59 decision to the Bulldogs as West Coast Conference play continued at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Ava Ranson got the scoring started on Saturday afternoon for San Diego with a nice pull up jumper.Â
- Lauren McCall picked up right where he left off two nights ago by draining another three pointer to give USD its first lead of the game at 5-4 with 7:54 left in the first quarter.Â
- The Toreros ended the opening quarter with a 6-2 run to take a 16-11 lead.Â
- Another bucket from McCall pushed the San Diego lead to 18-13 in the second quarter.Â
- Malia Tharpe jumped a pass at the 5:00 minute mark of the second quarter and converted a layup on the other end to inflate the Torero lead to 10 at 24-14.Â
- Gonzaga finished the half on a 13-0 run to take a 27-24 lead at half.Â
- After Courtney Wristen cashed a three to begin the third quarter and cut the deficit down to one point, a layup from Kylie Horstmeyer regained the lead for USD at 29-28.Â
- Horstmeyer drained another jumper at the 4:18 mark to inflate the USD lead to 35-31
- The Bulldogs pulled ahead to take a 44-40 lead as the third quarter came to a close.Â
- Back-to-back jumpers from Truitt Reilly in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter allowed San Diego to get within two points at 46-44 with 8:44 left on the clock.Â
- Hallie Rhodes knocked down a nice Euro step layup at the 5:15 mark of the fourth quarter.Â
- Despite a fierce comeback attempt from USD, Gonzaga managed to stay ahead and win the game with a final score of 66-59
TORERO TIDBITS
- Ranson, Horstmeyer, and McCall combined for 33 of USD's total 59 points, as the trio scored 12, 13, and 8, respectively.Â
- Wristen secured nine points, and went 2-for-2 from three.Â
- Saturday evening's contest featured six total lead changes.Â
- The Toreros recorded 22 total points off fast breaks, compared to Gonzaga's eight.Â
- McCall dished out a season high six assists alongside her eight points.Â
