Baseball Drops Series Finale at No. 17 Dallas Baptist

Toreros suffer 16-4 defeat to Patriots at Horner Ballpark, fall short of series victory over DBU

DALLAS — San Diego baseball (7-7, 0-0 WCC) on Sunday afternoon dropped a 16-4 decision to No. 17 Dallas Baptist (13-2, 0-0 C-USA), falling short as it tried to take two of three from the Patriots at Horner Ballpark.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Patriots got on the board first with three runs in the game's opening frame before Dustin Allen answered in the top of the third with his first homer of 2024, a towering solo shot to right field that cut the deficit to 3-1.
  • DBU immediately responded by scoring eight times in the bottom of the inning to take an 11-1 lead.
  • After Dallas Baptist scored three more in the bottom of the fourth, freshman Jonathan Fitz plated Will Worthington with an RBI triple to right-center field in the top of the fifth. Angelo Peraza followed with an RBI sacrifice lineout to right field, scoring Fitz to make it 16-3.
  • Ryan Ward worked a full count in the top of the ninth before legging out an RBI infield single that sent Max McGwire home to move the score to 16-4, but San Diego got no closer.
ON THE MOUND
  • Logan Reddemann started the game for USD and surrendered seven runs on six hits while walking four and striking out one.
  • Nine Torero pitchers followed in relief of him, including Dustin Allen, who took the mound for the first time in his college career after starting in center field.
TORERO TIDBITS
  • McGwire and Nico Libed notched their first hits as Toreros in the defeat. Libed's sixth-inning single also marked his first college hit.
  • Fitz's fifth-inning triple earned him his first college RBI.
  • Nick Suspenzi made his second appearance of the season on Sunday at DBU and did not allow a run across 0.2 innings.
  • After Reddemann exited with one out in the third, no Torero pitcher threw more than an inning.
UP NEXT
The Toreros are back in action on Tuesday, when they conclude an eight-game, 14-day road stint by hosting CSUN at Fowler Park. First pitch against the Matadors in the midweek non-conference matchup is set for 6:00 p.m.
