Baseball Falls to Saint Mary's in Game Two

San Diego loses hard-fought one-run decision at Fowler Park

SAN DIEGO – In the nightcap of the West Coast Conference series-opening doubleheader between San Diego and Saint Mary's, it was Déjà vu from the first game, as the Toreros allowed a sacrifice fly to plate the go-ahead run in the ninth inning to lose 3-2 at Fowler Park on Friday night.

Junior Josh Randall was one pitch away from throwing five scoreless innings, giving up a solo home run in the second inning. He scattered four hits and walked one, while striking out five against the Gaels (12-8, 2-0 WCC).

The USD offense had its struggles in the second game of the doubleheader as the Toreros (11-10, 0-2 WCC) went 2-for-12 with runners in scoring position.

Junior first baseman Jack Gurevitch, who was named WCC Player of the Week on Monday, recorded the team's lone run-producing hit on a two-run double to right center field to give San Diego a 2-1 lead in the seventh inning.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • St. Mary's got on the board first with a home run to center field in the second inning.
  • In the bottom of the third inning, despite a hit by pitch and a walk to begin the frame, San Diego was unable to get anything more.
  • In the fourth, USD got its first hit of the game with one out off the bat from junior designated hitter Austin Smith and went to second on a hit by pitch by junior right fielder Jakob Christian setting up a second consecutive inning with runners on first and second with less than two outs.
  • With junior catcher Ariel Armas at the plate, Smith and Christian moved up 90 feet on a wild pitch as Armas worked a walk, loading the bases for senior third baseman Will Wilmington, who was able to plate any runs, flying out to center field to end a scoreless fourth inning.
  • With one out in the fifth, junior shortstop Justin Decriscio hit a ground-rule double that bounced up and over the left center field wall but was stranded for the fifth runner left in scoring position in the last three innings.
  • The Toreros got themselves another one-out hit, this time in the seventh on a double to the right center field gap by senior second baseman Angelo Peraza. After a St. Mary's pitching change, Decriscio recorded a bloop single to left and advanced to second on the throw.
  • Gurevitch drove in Peraza and Decriscio on a two-run double to right center field to give San Diego its first lead of the game.
  • In the top of the ninth, St. Mary's took advantage of a couple of errors to tie the game at two apiece with a base hit to right field before taking the lead on a sacrifice fly.
  • San Diego was unable to get any heroics in the ninth inning, suffering their second straight one-run loss.
ON THE MOUND
  • Randall recorded two groundouts and strikeouts outside of a single for a clean first inning of work. Despite allowing the home run in the second, Randall retired the next three hitters in order with a strikeout, fly out and a ground out.
  • In the third inning, Randall was able to induce three straight groundouts to retire the side in order.
  • In the fifth inning, the junior got into some trouble. After allowing the first two Gaels to get on, he got an assist from his batterymate as Armas got a runner out trying to steal third base and a strike out two pitches later before getting out of the frame with his second strikeout of the inning and fifth of the night.
  • Randall's outing was done after five innings, allowing one run on four hits, one walk, while striking out five on 73 pitches and 55 for strikes.
  • Freshman Logan Reddemann was the first Torero out of the bullpen, pitching the sixth. He retired the side in order on a dozen pitches.
  • Reddemann continued on in the seventh with where he left off from the sixth, with another one, two, three 10-pitch inning, capped off by his second strikeout of the evening.
  • The freshman continued in the eighth, escaping with another scoreless inning as he received some assistance from Gurevitch, who dove toward the line and found Reddemann covering first base to end the inning.
  • Reddemann was on for the ninth but ran into trouble, allowing two runs – none earned – in his fourth inning of work.
TORERO TIDBITS
  • Decriscio's two hits mark his fifth multi-hit effort of the season and first since he recorded four against Michigan (March 15)
  • Randall, who earned a no-decision in his second home start, was able to lower his earned run average to 1.85, which leads the team's starting staff.
  • Gurevitch, who got the team's first weekly conference honor this season, recorded his third game of the season with at least two RBIs as he is hitting .370, which ranks inside the top 5 in the WCC.
  • The second game of the doubleheader marked Reddemann's second straight outing of 4.0 innings. It also marked the first time he has not allowed an earned run in six appearances this season.
