Christian and Reddemann Power USD Past Pacific in Stockton

Toreros beat Tigers 9-4 at Klein Family Field behind two homers from Christian, seven strong innings from Reddemann

STOCKTON, Calif. – San Diego baseball continued its offensive dominance on the road for a 9-4 victory to open a West Coast Conference series at Pacific.

Junior Jakob Christian went 3-for-5 with two home runs, four RBIs and three runs scored to lead the offense for the Toreros (14-10, 2-2 WCC).

On the pitching side, freshman Logan Reddemann was strong in relief, firing a new career-high seven innings without allowing a run while recording a career-high 10 strikeouts.

The Tigers (5-20, 1-3 WCC) were able to put up a four-run, two-out rally in the second inning to take a 4-3 lead before Reddemann shut Pacific down the rest of the game and the USD offense added on with six unanswered runs to increase the lead.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Jack Costello got the Toreros' first hit with a double to the left center field gap with one out in the second inning. After junior pitcher Austin Smith walked, Christian hit a three-run home run to left to break open the scoring.
  • The Tigers got on the board in their half of the second inning, creating a two-out rally, which began on a throwing error by sophomore third baseman Will Worthington. After the error, Pacific got a walk and an RBI single before a three-run home run to take a 4-3 lead before the inning came to an end.
  • Sophomore first baseman Jack Gurevitch got a one-out single in the third before  stealing second base two batters later before being stranded to end the inning.
  • Pacific got an infield single and a sacrifice bunt to begin the fourth inning before getting a groundout and a strikeout, leaving a runner at third base stranded.
  • In the fifth inning, Peraza took a hit by pitch in his second consecutive plate appearance to begin the frame. With Peraza running on the pitch, Dustin Allen singled to left, advancing Peraza to third base. Although junior shortstop Justin DeCriscio got on with a fielder's choice to set up second a third with one out, the Toreros were unable to come around to score leaving the score at 4-3 in favor of Pacific.
  • After Pacific got on base by an error from DeCriscio in the fifth, Armas was able to fire to second to get the runner out, trying to steal second base.
  • In the sixth, Christian recorded a one-out single to left. Two batters later, Worthington doubled down the left field line to set up runners at second and third for the top of the lineup.
  • San Diego came through as Peraza recorded a two-RBI hit to center field to take a 5-4 lead for a two-out rally of their own. With heads-up baserunning, Peraza took second for a double.
  • One pitch later, Peraza was able to get to third on a wild pitch and after some confusion on a popup hit by Allen that dropped, Peraza scored on an RBI single to take a 6-4 lead, their first, multi-run lead since the three-run home run by Christian four innings prior. The heads-up baserunning continued as on the popup, Allen was able to reach second base.
  • The sixth inning came to an end when DeCriscio struck out to cap off a three-run frame on four hits.
  • The Torero offense continued in the seventh as Gurevitch led off the inning with a solo home run to right center field to extend the lead to 7-4.
  • Two batters later, Christian pounded another ball over the wall, this time to left center to give USD a four-run lead.
  • In the eighth inning, Gurevitch recorded a two-out single down the right field line that hit the umpire. He stole second and took third on the same play due to a wild pitch. On the ensuing pitch, Costello recorded a base hit up the middle, scoring Gurevitch to give San Diego a 9-4 lead.
  • Costello stole second base for the second Torero stolen base of the inning before Smith grounded out to second to end the inning.
  • The Torero offense was unable to put anything together but it was more than enough already to lock up a five-run win.
ON THE MOUND
  • Smith retired five of his first six hitters he faced after the Tigers got a runner on via error and a walk with two outs in the bottom of the second inning, before allowing an unearned run before the three-run home run.
  • Smith went two innings, allowing three hits, two walks, four unearned runs while striking out two.
  • Reddemann was the first and eventually only man out of the pen for head coach Brock Ungricht Thursday evening. He recorded a scoreless third inning before getting the final two batters to go down by way of the strikeout.
  • Reddemann was out for his third inning of work in the fifth. After allowing a two-out walk for his first base on balls in this series opener, the freshman was able to get out of the frame.
  • Reddemann pitched the sixth inning for his fourth inning of work and first with a lead. He retired the side in order as the Toreros kept the momentum on their side heading into the final three frames.
  • The freshman hurler continued on in the seventh inning, putting up another scoreless frame to retire seven consecutive Tigers since the two-out walk in the fifth.
  • Reddemann was back out for the eighth inning and his streak of retiring Tigers ended on the first pitch of the inning on a breaking ball that hit the batter. However, Reddemann was able to get a strikeout and a back-pick by Armas to first base for a 2-3 double play.
  • After a double to deep center with two outs, Reddemann was able to get out of the inning on a flyout to left for his sixth scoreless inning of work.
  • Reddemann was on for the seventh straight inning and showed no signs of slowing down, striking his first hitter of the ninth inning, en route to striking out the side, giving USD the win and moving to 2-1.
  • Reddemann allowed two hits and a walk in seven scoreless innings, while striking out 10 in relief.
TORERO TIDBITS
  • Christian's three-run blast in the second and his solo shot in the seventh was his fifth and sixth home runs of the season, which now leads the team.
  • His two home runs marked the second straight game a Torero has hit two home runs in a game after Gurevitch recorded two blasts on Tuesday against Cal State Fullerton at Fowler Park.
  • Christian's three hits against the Tigers was his second multi-hit game in three games and his fourth game with at least two hits this season. The three hits are also his season-high.
  • Also going 3-for-5 at the plate was Gurevitch for his third consecutive multi-hit game and 12th of the season to increase his team-leading batting average to .389. Gurevitch also had an RBI, scored twice and had two stolen bases.
  • Gurevitch's seventh-inning home run was his third of the season and the third in as many games for the sophomore first baseman hitting in the cleanup spot.
  • Costello's first inning double was his fifth of 2024.  His two-hit effort was his 11th multi-hit effort of the season and his RBI single in the eighth inning was his 31st of the season, which leads the team and the conference.
  • Also recording two hits for USD was Allen, who recorded his third multi-hit performance in the last five games and the seventh of the season.
  • With the win, the Toreros moved to 26-8 all-time against the Tigers, including winning 11 of their last 13 games against Pacific over the last five years.
  • Furthermore, this win Thursday night marks San Diego's third three-game win streak of the season and its seventh victory in its last 10 games.
