San Diego Sweeps Pacific at Klein Family Field

Toreros beat Tigers 14-6 in Stockton on Saturday afternoon to secure fifth straight win

STOCKTON, Calif. — Seventeen hits, five doubles, and two home runs at the plate complemented 14 strikeouts on the mound for San Diego baseball (16-10, 4-2 WCC) on Saturday afternoon as it earned a decisive 14-6 win over Pacific (5-22, 1-5 WCC) at Klein Family Field to secure a fifth consecutive victory and its first series sweep of the 2024 season.

Pacific stayed within two runs through the first five innings of play before the Toreros took charge in the sixth with a pair of homers from Angelo Peraza and Ariel Armas.

Armas paced the USD offense on Sunday, turning in his finest offensive performance of the 2024 season thus far by gathering three RBIs while crossing the plate three times, giving him a 4-for-5 mark from the plate that included a booming home run to left field in the sixth inning.

BIG BATS

  • San Diego got the scoring started first in Saturday afternoon's contest, scoring a run in the top of the first and second innings with a pair of RBI singles from Jack Costello and Peraza to take an early 2-0 advantage.
  • Pacific knotted the game up at two runs apiece in the third inning with an RBI double down the left-field line, just before Armas ended the inning with a highlight-reel diving catch and tag to keep the score at 2-2.
  • Jakob Christian regained the two-run advantage for San Diego in the top of the fifth, ripping an RBI-double off the left-center wall to score Jack Gurevitch and Austin Smith — who reached on a walk and a hit-by-pitch — to make it 4-2, Toreros.
  • After UOP added a run in the second half of the frame on a wild pitch, Peraza set up a sixth-inning rally for San Diego by belting a two-run homer over Klein Family Field's right-field wall to plate Will Worthington and extend his team's lead to 6-3.
  • The Toreros continued to open up their lead in the sixth, adding three more runs on an RBI single from Costello and a two-RBI double from Christian.
  • Armas was next and delivered USD's second homer of the frame, this time a striking for a three-run shot over the left-center field wall to add the eighth run of the inning and 12th of the game for his team, making it 12-3 in favor of San Diego.
  • An RBI single from Worthington and a wild pitch allowed Gabe D'Arcy and Armas to cross the plate in the eighth, pushing two more runs past home plate for the Toreros to make it 14-3.
  • The Tigers added three runs in the bottom of the frame with a two-RBI single and an RBI-walk, but got no closer.
TEAMWORK MAKES THE DREAM WORK
  • Righty Calvin Schapira got the start on the mound for San Diego and turned in four innings, surrendering just two runs on seven hits, striking out seven and walking none. He then made way for Conner Thurman, who pitched two scoreless innings out of the bullpen, striking out three and walking one.
  • Ryan Kysar entered in relief in the seventh and pitched a scoreless inning of his own.
  • Alex Schrier followed in relief of Drake Frize to end the eighth inning and bridge the gap to the ninth, where Aídan Gonzalez finished the job with a scoreless ninth inning, striking out two of the three batters he faced.

TORERO TIDBITS

  • As well as going 2-for-3 from the plate on Saturday afternoon, Gurevitch drew three walks, giving him six total walks in the series, and 20 this season.
  • Christian's three hits against the Tigers marked his consecutive third multi-hit game and his sixth game with at least two hits this season.
  • Five doubles is the third-most USD has totaled in a single game this season, behind its previous mark of seven against Arizona and six at Michigan.
  • Six Torero batters (Peraza, Gurevitch, Costello, Christian, Armas, and Worthington) recorded multi-hit games on Saturday afternoon.
  • Christian's four RBI performance ties his career high for RBI's in a game, which was set two days ago in the opening game of the series.
  • Peraza's sixth-inning home run marks his second longball of the year.
  • San Diego has now been victorious in nine of its last 12 contests and has prevailed in five games in a row, marking its longest win streak of 2024.
