Baseball Falls in Series Opener at No. 17 Dallas Baptist

Toreros allow seven-run sixth in 9-2 loss to Patriots at Horner Ballpark

DALLAS — San Diego baseball scored two runs in the eighth inning, but it was too little, too late as No. 17 Dallas Baptist scored the game's first nine runs to secure a 9-2 victory at Horner Ballpark Friday evening.

The Toreros (6-6, 0-0 West Coast Conference) left 10 men on base and did not have an at-bat with a runner on third base and less than two outs. The Patriots (12-1, 0-0 Conference USA) took advantage of a throwing error followed by a grand slam to cap off a seven-run sixth inning to open their lead.

Junior Josh Randall entered his fourth start with 1.17 earned run average in the series opener for the Toreros. He threw four innings and escaped with two runs, three hits, three walks, while striking out four in 81 pitches, 46 for strikes.

Offensively, senior Jack Costello led the way with two hits, going 2-for-4 and an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Junior Austin Smith got the first hit of the game, a double that one-hopped the wall but was stranded in the top of the second inning.
  • In the third inning, redshirt freshman Ryan Ward got a leadoff walk and advanced to second on a passed ball before being stranded Friday evening.
  • Dallas Baptist got on the board first on a fielder's choice in the third inning on a ground ball to Costello. The Patriots added on in the fourth with another run on a two-out RBI single to left to take a 2-0 lead.
  • In the sixth, sophomore Jack Gurevitch opened the inning with a base hit to extend his hitting streak to 12 before Allen added a single to center and was stranded again when Costello struck out swinging.
  • The Patriots added on with seven in their half of the sixth, which was highlighted by a grand slam to right field.
  • USD got a leadoff double to the right center field gap by junior Jakob Christian but that was it for the Toreros in the seventh.
  • San Diego got on the board in the eighth inning with a two-out RBI single by Costello, scoring freshman Nico Libed
  • Later in the eighth with the bases loaded, Christian recorded the fourth Torero walk of the inning, plating Gurevitch. The two runs would be the only runs of the inning as freshman Angel Cortez grounded out to second.
  • In the final inning, junior Justin DeCriscio roped a one-out double to right center field but was stranded, succumbing to a seven-run loss.
ON THE MOUND
  • Randall began his outing getting the first six Patriot hitters to go down, including getting a diving stop by Jack Costello to induce a groundout to end the second inning.
  • After allowing two hits and a walk to load the bases to begin the third inning, Randall got a strikeout before allowing a run to get out of the jam.
  • The junior pitcher got into trouble again in the fourth after allowing a couple of walks before striking out the next two hitters before allowing his second run.
  • The fourth inning would be Randall's last as he allowed three hits, two earned runs, three walks and four strikeouts.
  • The bullpen schedule for the Toreros Friday evening began with graduate senior Alex Schrier, who struck out two in the fifth inning.
  • Schrier continued in the sixth and was unable to get an out, allowing five runs, three earned, before a second graduate senior came out of the bullpen in Vaughn Mauterer
  • After allowing a walk, Mauterer struck out the next two hitters before allowing a grand slam to right field.
  • Sophomore JD Goodcase pitched the seventh and was about to work around a two-out walk for a scoreless inning.
  • Redshirt sophomore Nick Suspenzi took the mound in the eighth and tossed a one, two, three scoreless inning, all by way of the flyout. Smith caught the first two flyouts before junior Gabe D'arcy secured the final out of the inning.
TORERO TIDBITS
  • Smith's second-inning double was his first two-bagger of 2024.
  • Goodcase allowed his first base on balls while continuing his streak of not allowing a run, now up to 3.1 scoreless innings in three appearances this season.
  • In the eighth inning, Libed, who is from San Diego and attended nearby Eastlake High School, worked a walk in his first plate appearance before touching home plate for the first time in his college career.
  • This was the Toreros and Patriots first meeting since having a three-game series at Alcala Park from March 4-6, 2022, which was highlighted by Kevin Sim's 5-for-5 performance and a walkoff hit in a 9-8 victory to take the first game of that series 24 months ago.
