No. 23 Women’s Tennis Returns to WCC Final via Win Over Pacific

Box Score SAN DIEGO – The No. 23 San Diego women's tennis program (16-6, 5-1 WCC) held off a late rally by Pacific (14-7, 4-2 WCC), but earned a 4-2 victory to advance to the WCC Tournament final on Friday afternoon at the Aztec Tennis Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Toreros opened the day with a hot start in doubles, as Abigail Desiatnikov and Elizabeth Goldsmith roared to a 6-0 victory at No. 1 doubles.
  • The remaining doubles matches would be tighter, but Filippa Bruu-Syversen and Jordyn McBride delivered the clinch with a 6-4 win.
  • The tide appeared to be entirely in the Toreros favor for much of the first half of singles, as San Diego took four first sets early on.
  • However, Pacific began to chip away at the Toreros lead and built momentum at the bottom half of the lineup.
  • Goldsmith and Mia Mack delivered composed, straight set victories to give San Diego a 3-0 advantage, but the Tigers would not go away.
  • The No. 3 seed rapidly secured matches at No. 4 and No. 6 singles to cut the lead to 3-2.
  • McBride and Bruu-Syversen found themselves in tense and nervy matches to close out the day.
  • Both appeared poised to close out their matches early, with opening set wins and the former up a break in the second set, but the Tigers pushed back to take the second set in Bruu-Syversen's match and rally to break back against McBride.
  • However, the senior McBride remained calm, taking the second set to a tiebreaker.
  • After starting at 3-3 in the tiebreaker, McBride took three consecutive points and would close out the match on her serve to seal the win.

NEXT UP
  • The Toreros will compete for the WCC Tournament title on Saturday, as they face off against No. 1 seeded and No. 6 ranked Pepperdine at 2 p.m., at the Aztec Tennis Center.
