San Diego Storms Into First Place With Decisive Win Over Zags

Toreros have won seven in a row and 18 of 20 after 14-2 rout of Gonzaga at Fowler Park

SAN DIEGO — San Diego baseball (29-12, 13-4 WCC) on Saturday evening turned in yet another stirring offensive performance to secure an authoritative series victory over Gonzaga (17-22, 12-5 WCC), dominating the Bulldogs by a 14-2 margin at Fowler Park behind a nine-run fifth inning at the plate and a strong start on the mound from true freshman righty Logan Reddemann

The Toreros struck for four runs in the second inning before exploding with three RBI doubles, a pair of RBI singles, and a sacrifice fly in the fifth.

Reddemann limited the Zags to just two runs through six impressive frames before handing things over to Alex Schrier and Vaughn Mauterer, who closed the game out with three scoreless innings on the hill to secure the Toreros' seventh straight win and their 18th victory in their last 20 games.

Angelo Peraza headlined a relentless performance at the plate for San Diego, one that saw each of the Toreros' original starting nine batters drive in at least one run.

A FIFTH-INNING EXPLOSION
  • Peraza kicked off an early second-inning rally for the Toreros by driving in Ariel Armas when he reached on an error.
  • Jack Gurevitch, Austin Smith, and Dustin Allen then followed by plating three more runs in the second with an RBI sacrifice bunt, an RBI single, and a bases-loaded walk to give the Toreros an early 4-0 advantage.
  • Gonzaga got on the board in the top of the fourth inning with a sacrifice fly to make it 4-1.
  • The Toreros caught fire in the bottom of the fifth inning, adding nine more runs with a sacrifice bunt that scored a run, three RBI doubles, and a pair of RBI singles to extend their lead to 13-1.
  • The Zags cut the lead down to 11 in the top of the sixth with an RBI single to right field.
  • A well-hit ball from Jakob Christian in the eighth inning fell just short of the center-field batter's eye for an RBI sacrifice fly, adding another run for USD to give it a 14-2 advantage that it did not relinquish.
LOCKDOWN LOGAN
  • Reddemann got the start on the mound for the Toreros and turned in six sharp innings, allowing just two earned runs on five hits while striking out a pair of batters and walking only one.
  • Schrier bridged the gap to the ninth inning by pitching scoreless seventh and eighth innings, striking out three and walking none.
  • Mauterer closed things out on the mound for San Diego by pitching a scoreless ninth to secure the win for the Toreros.

  • Reddemann picked up the win on the mound for USD, moving his record to 5-3 in his debut college season.
  • San Diego recorded six total doubles in Saturday evening's win, marking its most since it tallied seven against Arizona earlier this season.
