Softball Takes Split Against Santa Clara to Wrap 2024 Campaign

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The San Diego softball program (18-38, 6-10 WCC) wrapped up their 2024 campaign, falling 6-3 to Santa Clara (30-23, 9-7 WCC), on Saturday afternoon at the Santa Clara Softball Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED – SANTA CLARA 6, SAN DIEGO 3
  • San Diego opened the game with a hot start once again, striking for a pair of runs in the first inning.
  • Taylor Johnson drew a hit-by-pitch and Joecellia Roberts walked before Tele Jennings laced a double to right center field to take a 2-0 lead.
  • However, Santa Clara had a quick answer and scored two runs to tie the game in the bottom half of the frame.
  • Nevertheless, the Toreros struck back in the second inning, as Michelle Delgado singled and advanced to second on a Mikalyn Emanuelli bunt to set up Amanda Limon.
  • Limon singled to center field and scored the speedy Delgado to make it 3-2 in favor of the Toreros.
  • However, the tide would begin to turn after a scoreless second inning, as the Broncos found momentum and retook the lead.
  • San Diego's offense was held to four straight hitless innings against Broncos reliever Hazyl Gray.
  • Later on, Santa Clara was able to extend the lead to 6-3 with more runs in the sixth inning.
  • With only one chance left, Alyssa Hernandez tried to rally the team with a leadoff single in the seventh inning, but the Toreros could not generate the comeback.

TORERO TIDBITS
  • Johnson finished with a batting average of .383, which secured her the WCC batting title. She is the first Torero to win the batting title since Taylor Spence in 2017.
  • Limon became the fifth Torero in program history to start in 200 games and the first to accomplish the mark since Jade Quentin in 2001.
  • Jennings tallied her 15th double, setting a new single-season Torero record for doubles by a freshman. Her total is also fourth all-time.
  • Johnson finished her season with an on-base streak of 18 consecutive games.
  • Limon ended the season with at least one hit in 30 of her last 32 games.
