No. 23 Women’s Tennis Opens NCAA Tournament Run

SAN DIEGO – The No. 23 San Diego women's tennis program (16-7, 5-1 WCC) will open their 2024 NCAA Tournament run on Friday, facing No. 56 Grand Canyon (22-2, 7-0 WAC) in the opening round at 11 a.m., at Marks Stadium in Los Angeles, Calif.
 
Should the Toreros defeat Grand Canyon, they will face either No. 11 USC (18-8, 8-2 PAC-12) or No. 72 Cal Poly (14-11, 6-3 Big West) on Saturday.
 
LAST TIME OUT
  • The Toreros dropped the WCC Tournament final to No. 6 Pepperdine on Apr. 27 at the Aztec Tennis Center.
  • Despite rallies from Kristina Nordikyan and Mia Mack, the Toreros were unable to secure the comeback.
 
WHAT TO WATCH FOR
  • San Diego is seeking a return to the second round of the NCAA Tournament once again, after defeating California in the opening round last season.
  • Mack and Claudia De Las Heras lead the Toreros in the latest ITA singles rankings, standing at No. 68 and No. 69 in the nation, respectively.
  • In addition, Abigail Desiatnikov and Elizabeth Goldsmith make their debut as a duo in the national rankings, checking in at No. 50.
  • San Diego is 11-0 when winning the doubles point this season.
  • The Toreros have tallied 17 wins over ranked opponents in singles this season.

  • Goldsmith has not lost when playing at No. 3 singles this season.
  • San Diego is set to meet Grand Canyon for the first time in program history.
  • In addition, the Toreros could match up with USC for the second time this season, after winning the first matchup back on Feb. 3.
