HOW IT HAPPENED – SAINT MARY'S 17, SAN DIEGO 3 (F/5)
- Saturday's opener proved to be a struggle from the start for the Toreros, who allowed five runs in the opening frame.
- However, the Toreros attempted a rally in the bottom half of the frame, as Amanda Limon and Taylor Johnson each singled, while Joecellia Roberts drew a hit-by-pitch to load the bases with one out.
- However, the Toreros would only get one run home on an Emma Giaime grounder to cut the Gaels lead to 5-1.
- The lead would balloon for the Gaels to 14-1 through the next three frames.
- San Diego did find some positives in the bottom half of the fourth, as Alyssa Hernandez and Limon both singled and the runners advanced a base on a Carly Ruiz sacrifice bunt.
- From there, Johnson laced a double to right field to score two and make it 14-3.
- Ultimately, the Gaels would add three more runs and end the game in five innings.
HOW IT HAPPENED – SAINT MARY'S 4, SAN DIEGO 2
- Needing a response in game two, the Toreros and Gaels played a far more competitive contest in the finale.
- Despite a run coming home in the first for the Gaels, McKenna Braegelmann was composed in the circle and worked around a few errors by her defense.
- The Toreros had hits in each of the first three innings, as Ruiz doubled in the first inning and Mikalyn Emanuelli singled in the second inning.
- In the third, Shawnese Hogue-Lacy and Limon each singled and advanced into scoring position but were stranded on the base paths.
- The Gaels would take a 4-0 lead into the seventh inning, before the Toreros attempted a rally.
- Emanuelli and Hernandez each singled, with the latter driving in the former to make it 4-1.
- From there, Hogue-Lacy doubled, and Limon delivered a sacrifice fly to cut the lead to 4-2.
- Ruiz singled to put the go-ahead run at the plate with runners on the corners, but the Toreros would come up short.
