MARICOPA, Ariz. — Sophomores
You Seong Choi and
Ryan Abuan started their 2024-2025 campaign in style for San Diego golf as the Southern Dunes Collegiate Invitational wrapped up on Tuesday afternoon at Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club in Maricopa, Arizona. Both golfers led USD by carding a six-under 210, which allowed the pair to finish tied for fourth overall among 58 golfers. Abuan recorded rounds of 70, 66, 74, while Choi set forth totals of 71, 72, and 67.
As a team, USD finished fourth of eight total programs in the tournament, combining for a score of nine-under on the event after team rounds of 288, 283, and 284 strokes that saw it finish ahead of Eastern Michigan, Georgia State, Kansas State, and Kennesaw State but 21 shots off of leader and event host USC.
Washington State graduate transfer Jaden Cantafio carded the next best San Diego finish, turning in scores of 72, 74, and 69 (215) to finish tied for 21st overall in the tournament, and freshman Cooper Humphreys was just behind, placing T-37 in his USD debut (+4, 75, 71, 74, 220), and was followed by freshman Winston Shen (T-50, +11, 77, 75, 75, 227), who competed as an individual.
Senior Ian Maspat completed the first two rounds in the tournament —recording scores of 75 and 76 — before withdrawing.
The Toreros are back in action on Friday, October 7, when they begin play in the Alister MacKenzie Invitational at Meadow Club Golf Course in Fairfax, CA.
