Tarvet Has Big Day, Klaassen the Hero in Historic Comeback Win at No. 20 UCLA

LOS ANGELES – No. 16 San Diego Men's Tennis clinched a top-20 win in dramatic fashion, coming back from down 1-3 to top No. 20 UCLA 4-3 on the road on Sunday afternoon.

It was the Toreros second straight 4-3 over win the Bruins, a monumental first road win in Westwood in program history.

"When good things happen, it creates happiness. When bad things happen, you learn from experience. When great things happen, you create memories. This was a great day to be a Torero," USD Head Coach Ryan Keckley said. "I'm just really excited for the boys and the program. The guys battled adversity and conditions to come up with a gutsy performance. Coming back after losing the doubles point and being down 3-1 overall is incredibly challenging."

Redshirt Junior Stian Klaassen was the hero on the day, clinching a three-set victory as the last court standing and the score knotted at threes. The 71st-ranked Dutchman was able to fend off UCLA's No. 82 Emon van Loben Sels, 6-4, 5-7, 6-4, despite a multiple-break comeback in the third set, and was stormed by his teammates on the court.

Klaassen also played a part in a doubles win, paired with junior Oliver Tarvet as the top-ranked doubles team in the country to take down the 10th-ranked duo of Hoogmartens/Tripathi, 6-4. UCLA was able to claim the doubles point, however, winning first at No. 2 then clinching a tiebreak at No. 3, 7-6 (7-2).

In singles play, UCLA quickly extended its lead to two, the No. 93 Tripathi winning 6-3, 6-1 over junior Neo Niedner at No. 6 singles. San Diego got on the board by way of freshman Adrien Berrut's first career dual win, 7-5, 6-4 at No. 5 singles. The Bruins went back up two points, securing a victory from their 50th-ranked Rudy Quan on court two.

Without a match to spare, the Toreros had to win out on the remaining three courts. The first point came by a third set retirement at No. 3 singles, seeing No. 29 Savriyan Danilov victorious.

The next was a top 15 win for the 15th-ranked Oliver Tarvet, who topped No. 13 Spencer Johnson on the feature court, 7-6 (7-2), 6-4. Then, with all eyes on him, Klaassen clinched the improbable match win.

"I'm so proud of these boys and the grit it took to beat this talented group on the road," said Keckley. "This UCLA team is deep and tough. They are going to win a lot of matches this year. We will regroup and set our attention to kickoff weekend in Florida come Friday."

Up Next
The Toreros compete at the highly-touted ITA Kickoff Weekend beginning Friday, Jan. 24, in Tallahassee, Fla.. First, they'll take on current No. 15 South Carolina on Friday, and either No. 9 Florida State or UNC Wilmington Saturday.
