No. 15 Toreros Earn Second Straight 3-0 Victory

San Diego trounces Redhawks 3-0 at Torero Stadium

SAN DIEGO — Capping off a perfect week on their home grass, the San Diego men's soccer team (9-2-3, 3-1-1 WCC) picked up another dominant conference victory as they defeated Seattle U (3-5-5, 1-2-2 WCC) by a 3-0 final score at Torero Stadium.

For the second game in a row, the Toreros received a second half brace with Steven Ramirez scoring a pair of late goals to put the Redhawks away. Getting the offense going early, Devin Zachry put a well-placed ball off the Seattle U defender that found the back of the net for the game winner on Saturday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Saturday evening's match began with a pair of injury delays for each team.
  • A curling cross from Luca Fava in the 12th minute found Cesar Bahena at the backpost but he didn't quite have an angle on it, as it went into the side netting.
  • Zachry ripped a shot from 35 yards out in the 36th minute that rattled off the cross-bar nearly giving his team the opening goal.
  • Zachry had another shot just a minute later in the 37th, this time capitalizing on a perfect ball over the top from Josh Martinez that trickled into the six-yard box and found its way in the back of the net for the first goal of the night.
  • Seattle found the back of the net in the 43rd minute, but the referee rescinded the goal due to a foul on Lucca Adams before the goal, keeping it at 1-0 ahead of the break.
  • San Diego's next best goal scoring chance came in the 63rd minute when Iain Wagner cut inside the 18-yard box and hit a shot towards the center of the goal, but a save from the Redhawk goalkeeper kept it out.
  • Both teams traded off chances inside the box but none could convert as the second half continued on with San Diego ahead by a goal.
  • A long ball from Taj Eagleston in the 79th minute connected with an open Ramirez down the wing, who dribbled in and cut to his right foot before firing off a curling shot into the far-side netting to give USD some insurance and make it 2-0.
  • Ramirez put the icing on the cake in the 86th minute after Bahena crossed in a perfect ball that he slotted home to give his team a 3-0 advantage it would not relinquish.
TORERO TIDBITS
  • With this pair of goals tonight, Ramirez now leads his team in goals with six, a race that has flipped back and forth multiple times this season between him, Bahena, and Wagner.
  • Adams and the USD backline have now earned their second consecutive clean sheet, and sixth of the season.
  • Eagleston's assist puts him in the lead among his teammates in assists with four, with six of his teammates just behind with three.
  • The Toreros currently sit in third in the WCC standings with 10 points, behind Portland and Oregon State who each have 11. All four teams currently have four games remaining in conference play.
