No. 9 Toreros Shutout Gonzaga to Secure Unbeaten Home Season

Iain Wagner scored his seventh goal of the season as USD inches closer to another WCC crown

SAN DIEGO – Competing in the team's final regular season home match, the No. 9 San Diego men's soccer team (12-2-3, 6-1-1 WCC) kept their WCC championship hopes alive as they battled for a 1-0 victory over Gonzaga (4-8-3, 1-5-2 WCC) on Saturday night at Torero Stadium.

Familiar to the score sheet, Iain Wagner separated himself as  USD's leading goalscorer season as he buried his seventh of the season after heading in a great feed from Devin Zachry's cross.

The Toreros have recorded five straight shutouts, which sets a new program record for the longest stretch of games not allowing a goal in program history. Lucca Adams made a couple of outstanding saves late in the game to earn him his eighth clean sheet of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • In the 11th minute, the Toreros were pressuring heavily with three straight crosses into the box. Luca Fava placed a ball into the eight-yard box to Cesar Bahena who headed a shot forcing a save from the Bulldog goalie for USD's first big chance of the game.
  • With continuous offensive pressure, Bahena stole the ball from the Bulldog defender at the top of the penalty box for a play that was reviewed for potential penalty but ultimately was not called in the 21st minute.
  • On a Torero corner kick, Josh Martinez placed in a cross in the 27th minute as Bahena challenged the crossbar once more, barely missing the top right corner.
  • Generating another quality chance late in the first half, Wagner's shot was blocked by the Gonzaga defender in the 37th minute as the game was scoreless through the first 45 minutes of play.
  • Forty seconds into the second half, Wagner rocketed a shot off the right side of the crossbar from just outside the penalty box that nearly went in.
  • Taj Eagleston in the 48th minute rifled a shot that was deflected off a Bulldog defender's leg that Steven Ramirez ricocheted off the left post for another just miss for the Toreros.
  • Eagleston dragged three Bulldogs to him in the penalty box as he opened up space to play a Devin Zachry ball into the box that was headed in for a goal by Wagner to give USD a 1-0 lead in the 57th minute.
  • Wagner hit the woodwork again when his third shot of the game was saved off the crossbar, and then started an attack which Ramirez forced a jumping save from the Gonzaga goalkeeper in the 74th minute.
  • Lucca Adams left his imprint on the game in the final 15 minutes when he made a flying save for a shot that he deflected off the crossbar and another shot bound for the top right corner to preserve the Torero lead.
  • San Diego would control the final few minutes as they picked up the victory and finished off their home schedule unbeaten at Torero Stadium.
TORERO TIDBITS
  • The sophomore's had their moment on senior night as Saturday's game-winning goal scored by Wagner was assisted by both Zachry and Eagleston. Adams had a few key moments as well with two massive saves to preserve the clean sheet.
  • San Diego more than tripled the amount of shots that Gonzaga had as they had 16 shots on the night, holding the Bulldogs without a single shot in the first 45 minutes of play.
  • Tonight's home finale was the last ever meeting between the two schools as conference opponents with Gonzaga leaving the WCC at the conclusion of the athletic year.
  • The San Diego men's soccer program would like to thank all of our seniors: Vicente Ayala, Cesar Bahena, Simon Duus Muller, Samy Kanaan, Kayden Kropf, Josh Martinez, Kevin Pena, Adam Salama, Sami Tsipena, Christian Vigil, Owen Walz and Ethan Warne for the great memories and moments as Toreros.
