PULLMAN, Wash. – Wrapping up their week in the Pacific Northwest, the San Diego women's basketball team (4-17, 0-12 WCC) battled tough but couldn't overcome the Washington State Cougars (15-10, 10-4 WCC) on Saturday afternoon as they fell 67-60 at Beasley Coliseum.
Truitt Reilly had a phenomenal afternoon for the Toreros on Saturday as she recorded her fifth double-double of the season with 17 points and 12 rebounds against the Cougars.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Cougars were able to score the first points of the game, but USD didn't wait long to respond as Lauren McCall grabbed a rebound and walked into an open three to make it 4-2 Toreros.
- Midway through the quarter, Hallie Rhodes knocked down a pair of free throws to give USD a three point lead at 10-7.
- Washington State went on a run late in the quarter to pull ahead, but the Toreros took advantage of having the final shot of the quarter as Kylie Horstmeyer made a pull-up jumper as WSU led 16-13 after the first 10 minutes.
- Starting the new quarter strong, Horstmeyer split a pair of free throws and McCall converted a layup after a strong take to the basket that knotted the score at 16-all.
- The second quarter was a back-and-forth affair with each side trading baskets before Reilly made back-to-back shots in the paint to help USD re-take the lead at 24-21 with 6:04 left until the break.
- Washington State was able to get a little separation in the later portion of the second quarter before H. Rhodes made two free throws for USD's last points of the quarter as the Toreros trailed 34-30 at halftime.
- After the Cougars scored the first five points of the second half, Ava Ranson was able to respond with a jumper of her own to make it 39-32 WSU.
- USD then responded with two more key plays as McCall knocked down a shot and Reilly converted a layup to get the lead down to five.
- Rhodes would score the Toreros' final bucket of the quarter at the 2:33 mark as San Diego's defense hung tough and kept the deficit at nine heading into the fourth at 51-42.
- Keeping pace in the fourth, USD was able to score the first points of the quarter as Reilly drew a pair of quick Cougar fouls and then put home a layup to get their deficit down to seven points at 51-44.
- Both defenses buckled down and got consecutive stops midway through the quarter before Horstmeyer made a big jump shot after the media timeout to bring USD's deficit back down to seven at 55-48.
- The Toreros began applying pressure late in the quarter and forced a few Washington State turnovers as they brought the Cougar lead down to six before eventually coming up short by a 67-60 final score on Saturday afternoon.
