San Diego Completes Comeback Victory Over No. 38 ASU

Toreros defeat Sun Devils by 4-3 margin at Whiteman Tennis Center in Tempe, Arizona

TEMPE, Ariz. — No. 7 San Diego men's tennis clinched a victory in spectacular fashion on Sunday afternoon, coming back from being down 1-3 to defeat No. 38 Arizona State 4-3 on the road.

Redshirt junior Stian Klaassen and junior Neo Niedner were the heroes of the day for the Toreros, as they both clinched must-win three set victories to win it for USD.

The Toreros' valiant effort on Sunday afternoon started in the doubles competition, as USD snatched a tough doubles point courtesy of a clutch 7-6 (7-5 tiebreaker) victory in number three doubles from Adrien Berrut and Nikhil Niranjan. A duo of Blake Kasday and Savriyan Danilov in number two doubles also defeated their respective opponents to allow Berrut and Niranjan to clinch the point.

In singles play, Arizona State quickly took the lead with wins in numbers four, two, and six singles, giving them a 3-1 advantage with three more courts to play.

Without a match to spare, San Diego had to win out on the remaining three courts. The first point came in number one singles from No. 44 Danilov, as he earned the win over his opponent in straight sets (6-3, 6-4).

That left two remaining matches to play in number three and five singles, with both heading to third sets.

Niedner struck second for USD in number five singles, knotting the score up at three points each by taking down his opponent in the third set by a 6-3 margin, after winning set one 7-5, and dropping set two 3-6.

No. 100 ranked Klaassen then sealed the deal for his team by dominating the second and third sets by 6-3 and 6-1 margins after losing set one, winning it for San Diego in dramatic fashion.

"Huge effort from the boys today in Phoenix. It was a gritty performance with the whole team stepping up to secure the win," said head coach Ryan Keckley. "So proud of the resilience and continued belief in each other. ASU is never an easy out and they made us earn every point along the way. Looking forward to being back home at Skip and Cindy this Thursday as we play host to a great USC team."
