USD Picked First in 2025 WCC Baseball Coaches Preseason Poll

Logan Reddemann, Austin Smith, and Jack Gurevitch selected to 2025 WCC Baseball Preseason Team

SAN BRUNO, Calif. — San Diego was picked first in the WCC Coaches Preseason Poll for the first time since 2017 and three Toreros earned WCC Preseason Team recognition, the West Coast Conference announced on Thursday afternoon as part of its 2025 Baseball Preseason Honors.

USD took home the top spot in the league's 2025 poll with 64 points and eight first-place votes, putting it 16 points and seven first-place votes ahead of Portland, which was picked second. San Diego was also picked to win the league in both 2017 and 2016, but had not been named the WCC preseason favorite since then. The Toreros placed second in the poll in both 2023 and 2024.

Jack Gurevitch, Austin Smith, and Logan Reddemann comprised the Toreros' selections to the conference's 2025 Preseason Team, marking the latest in a flurry of recognition for a talented trio.

Gurevitch, a junior first baseman, earned his second consecutive WCC Preseason Team honor after a dynamic sophomore season that saw him earn a spot on the 2024 All-WCC Second Team. The Pacific Palisades, California native batted .324 (70-for-216) with 51 runs scored, 11 doubles, nine home runs, 36 runs batted in, 39 walks, 12 hit by pitches, a .509 slugging percentage, and a .450 on-base percentage last year.

He had the third-highest batting average in the WCC in 2024 while putting together 20 multi-hit games, a 12-game hit streak, a 19-game reached base streak, and eight multi-hit games during the regular season.

On January 23, Gurevitch was named the 2025 Perfect Game Preseason Player of the Year.

Smith, a senior left-handed pitcher, outfielder, and designated hitter, received his first career WCC preseason honor after a singular performance in 2024 that saw him excel on both sides of the ball en-route to an All-WCC First Team selection. He posted a 7-0 record, three saves, a 3.49 ERA, and 49 strikeouts across 56.2 innings pitched, eight relief appearances, and nine starts while batting .314 (64-for-204) with 42 runs scored, 11 doubles, seven home runs, 39 RBIs, and 13 hit by pitches as he slugged .471 and got on base at a .429 clip.

In addition to his 2025 WCC Preseason Team nod, he was also named a 2025 D1Baseball Preseason Second Team All-American, the 2025 D1Baseball WCC Preseason Player of the Year, and to the 2025 Golden Spikes Award Preseason Watch List.

Smith's 2024 accolades included being named a 2024 Third-Team All-American by both the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association and the American Baseball Coaches Association, a finalist for the 2024 John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year Award, a semifinalist for the 2024 Dick Howser Trophy, and a 2024 San Diego Sports Association Amateur Star of the Year.

Reddemann, a sophomore utility player who both pitches and plays outfield, secured his first career WCC preseason recognition after establishing himself as the premier freshman arm in the league a year ago.

The Palmdale, California native posted a 7-4 record with a 4.01 ERA and a 1.31 WHIP across 15 appearances, 13 starts, and 76.1 innings pitched in his debut college season, striking out 66 against only 19 walks.

He was named the WCC Freshman of the Year, to the All-WCC First Team, and to the All-WCC Freshman team after dominating the West Coast Conference in 2024, posting a 6-2 record across eight appearances, six starts and 47 innings pitched in league play alongside a 1.72 ERA and a 1.11 WHIP while striking out 44 and walking nine.

His efforts last season earned him a 2024 NCBWA Freshman All-America nod, and on January 23 he was named the 2025 Perfect Game Preseason WCC Pitcher of the Year.

USD went 41-15 (20-4 WCC) in 2024 and won both the WCC Regular Season Championship and WCC Tournament Championship to advance to the NCAA Tournament for the 10th time in program history.

The Toreros will begin their 2025 schedule on Friday, February 14, when they host No. 23 TCU at Fowler Park. First pitch against the Horned Frogs in the season opener is set for 6:00 p.m.
