Anzai Homers in Midweek Loss to Cal State Fullerton

Toreros fall to Titans by 6-2 margin on Tuesday night at Goodwin Field

FULLERTON, Calif. — AJ Anzai launched his first home run in a San Diego uniform on Tuesday evening to keep the Toreros (4-20, 1-2 WCC) within striking distance of Cal State Fullerton, but a three-run fifth inning from the Titans (11-13, 4-5 Big West) dealt USD a 6-2 loss at Goodwin Field.

Anzai, a graduate transfer from Division III Chapman University, hammered a 2-1 fastball over the right-field fence in the top of the second inning for a towering solo homer that cut CSUF's early lead to 2-1.

After Cal State Fullerton answered back with a run in the bottom half of the frame to make it 3-1, freshman outfielder Rex Watson brought the Toreros back within a run of the Titans in the top of the fifth, slapping a two-out single back up the middle to plate Aden Howard, who had reached on a double.

CSUF responded with a trio of runs in their next turn at the plate, creating a 6-2 advantage on a two-RBI double and an RBI groundout that was enough for them to prevail in the midweek non-conference matchup.

Four San Diego pitchers teamed up to throw three scoreless innings to end Tuesday's game. Tristan LaMaison put together the Toreros' longest relief appearance, turning in 1.2 perfect frames with two strikeouts.

Jack McWilliams needed only eight pitches to strike out the only two batters he faced in the eighth before giving way to Jack Giordano, who ended the inning by getting the only Titan he faced to fly out to center field.

NOTABLE
  • Austin Smith went 1-for-4 with a single, extending his hit streak to 15 games and his reached-base streak to 17 games. It's the longest hit streak by a Torero since at least 2021, and puts him three games shy of Hunter Mercado-Hood's 18-game hit streak during the 2018 season. Josh Harris holds the program record with a 31-game hit streak that was achieved from March 11, 2000 to May 3, 2000. Research on historical Torero hit streaks prior to 2021 is currently ongoing.
  • Anzai's second-inning homer was the 17th of his college career. He hit 16 across 129 games and four seasons at Chapman from 2021-2024.
  • Connor Meidroth drew USD's lone walk. He's now reached base in four straight games.
UP NEXT
