San Diego Dismantles Santa Clara to Win Sixth Straight WCC Series

Toreros hammer five home runs, 21 hits in 25-9 mercy-rule victory at Stephen Schott Stadium on Sunday afternoon

SANTA CLARA, Calif. –  After losing 10-1 Saturday night in the second game of the three-game series at Santa Clara, San Diego Baseball was looking to conclude its 2025 regular-season road schedule in strong fashion in Sunday's rubber game at Stephen Schott Stadium.

The Toreros' offense came out powerful, recording a tied-for-season high 21 hits as San Diego won the series over Broncos with a 25-9 victory.

The 25 runs are a season-high as San Diego (22-28, 16-5 West Coast Conference) pounded five home runs, including a grand slam off the bat from Isaiah Lane, who went 2-for-6 with three runs, five RBIs. Lane was part of today's starting lineup where all nine batters recorded at least one hit and eight Toreros recorded multi-hit performances against Santa Clara (20-27, 7-14 WCC).

It is the first time in 20 years USD has scored exactly 25 runs in a game, which came on April 9, 2005, also at Santa Clara.

Leading the way offensively was Rex Watson, who went 4-for-5 in the cleanup spot with four runs, two RBIs, a double and a sixth-inning home run.

Aden Howard put the finishing touches to a 13-run third inning with a three-run home run to center field, scoring Watson and Jayden Lobliner. In that third inning, USD sent 17 men to plate while taking advantage of two Santa Clara errors.

Two pitches into the game, just as everyone was getting settled into the series finale, Jack Gurevitch hit his third leadoff home run of the season, sending an 0-1 pitch, not only over the center field wall, but over the batter's eye for his 13th home run of the season.

Then in the second inning, after Watson doubled to begin the frame, AJ Anzai singled him home. After a strikeout, Connor Meidroth was hit by a pitch and Gurevitch walked, setting up Lane's grand slam to cap off a five-run second and take a 6-0 lead.

Torero pitching had plenty of run support. Dallin Harrison got the start, going 1.1 innings while allowing five hits, four runs, two walks while striking out one. All four runs given up were on back-to-back home runs with a three-run shot and solo home run.

Hayden Cody, who earned the win to move to 5-3, worked the next three innings before giving way to Jamie Robertson.

Then, Austin Smith worked two shutout innings while scattering three walks and striking out three to close out the game.

NOTABLE
  • Isaiah Lane recorded five RBIs, which is a new career-high.
  • Lane was one eight USD batters to have a multi-hit performance and a multi-RBI day. Each of the top seven hitters in San Diego's lineup did that Sunday against the Broncos.
  • AJ Beltre went 2-for-3 Sunday. He extended his on-base streak to 13 games with his RBI double in the third inning.
  • Austin Smith went 3-for-5 to raise his batting average up to .354, tied with Gurevitch for the team lead. It also marks his third three-hit game of 2025.
  • Jayden Lobliner also went 3-for-5, which increased his average to .277. Sunday marked his fourth three-hit game of the season.
  • Rex Watson went 4-for-5 for his first four-hit game of his collegiate career as it marked his 11th multi-hit game.
  • It is also the fourth time this season a Torero has recorded four hits in a game (Also Gurevitch 2, Lobliner 1)
  • San Diego tied or set season highs in runs scored (25), hits (21) and RBIs (23) from its 23-8 win at Saint Mary's (April 12)
  • This is the fourth time this year USD has won by 10 or more runs, forcing the mercy rule (Also: March 22 at LMU, March 29 vs. Pepperdine, April 12 at Saint Mary's)
  • The 25 runs scored are tied for the third most runs scored in a single game in program history and most in 20 years (Also: @ Santa Clara (4/9/05), vs. Eastern Michigan (3/2/01), @ Gonzaga (4/7/01), vs. Master's College (4/28/86))
