San Diego Earns Sweep of Pacific on Senior Day

Toreros close out 2025 regular-season schedule with 9-3 victory over Tigers at Fowler Park

SAN DIEGO – On Saturday at Fowler Park, the final game of the regular season commenced for San Diego baseball against Pacific.

Saturday was also Senior Day, recognizing four players – AJ Anzai, Nick Suspenzi, Austin Smith and Andrew Mosiello – as the Toreros finished off the regular season with a sweep over the Pacific Tigers with a 9-3 victory.

"To see everything that those guys have given for this team, this program, the university and the city, it's just awesome to see them go out in style," head coach Brock Ungricht said of this year's graduating class. "It was just extraordinary watching our guys walk down that third base line in front of the dugout, and seeing the whole team just going nuts for each guy. It really shows the bond, the chemistry and the love that these guys have for one another, and that's what makes the team special."

All four players in this year's graduating class also played in today's contest.

Suspenzi got the start, firing a clean first inning. Anzai got the start at first base as he recorded an RBI single in the eighth inning of his final at-bat at Fowler Park. Smith, who got the win last night, got the start in center field and went 2-for-5, with two runs scored and an RBI, highlighted by an RBI double just before Anzai stepped to the plate.

After Anzai hit to make it a 9-3 lead, head coach Brock Ungricht made it three straight seniors to step up to the plate with Mosiello.

Although he struck out, Smith said that inning is one they'll never forget.

"He was standing next to (Ungricht) the entire game with his helmet on, asking for scouting reports, just being Andy," Smith said. "Seeing that great guy in the dugout, and then seeing him go up there, taking a big 3-0 swing, nothing to lose. It's just a great overall day of baseball for us."

Although USD (25-28, 19-5, WCC) did not score first for the first time in this series against the Tigers (20-36, 8-16 WCC) after Pacific scored on an RBI single in the second, the Toreros immediately responded.

Vincent Venverloh recorded a one-out, two-RBI bloop single to left to give the Toreros its first lead of the afternoon in the bottom of the second.

Then in the third, Nico Libed singled to center, plating Smith to retake the lead after Pacific scored once in the top half of the inning. USD then added on in the ensuing batter. With the bases loaded, Venverloh came back up and got two more RBIs on a double squeeze bunt as Jonathan Fitz scored from third and Ryan Ward hustled his way around from second to give San Diego the lead for good, 5-2.

Pacific got within two runs in the sixth inning on an RBI single through the left side. However, Jamie Robertson was able to fight back, keeping runners at first and second stranded in a two-run game. He fielded his position on a bunt to stop a runner at the plate before getting a strikeout to end the inning and limiting the damage to just one run.

Robertson was one of eight Toreros to pitch in Saturday's finale. After Suspenzi, Tristan LaMaison threw an inning. David Horn Jr. took the third and fourth innings. Jack Giordano, who earned the win, pitched a scoreless fifth. After Robertson, Fernando Palencia, AJ Beltre and Dallin Harrison took the final three innings to close it out.

As Palencia and Beltre fired a zero on the scoreboard, USD got its much-needed insurance with an RBI single from Ward in the seventh and three in the eighth, highlighted by the three consecutive at-bats from the graduating class.
