CARLSBAD, Calif. – San Diego Men's Golf battled the conditions of a National Championship tournament on day two of the NCAA DI Men's Championships Saturday, shooting a collective +28 to drop to 30
th in the tournament with one day to go.
After starting the day in 19
th places after a score of +6 – -1 through 16 holes – in Friday's opening round, the Toreros struggled to get in a rhythm on the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa, a 7,548 yard, par 72 course Saturday.
While USD finds itself in last place there is ground to be made up in the final round being played on Sunday. The top 15 teams and nine non-advancing individuals after the 54-hole, three-round stroke play advance to a match play playoff. San Diego is 30 shots out of eighth place, a score that as seen today, can be made up in a round.
Grad
Jaden Cantafio stepped up and led the Toreros on the day, shooting two over par (74), with three bogies and a birdie. His total is brought to +5, 80
th individually. Tied with him overall is freshman
Cooper Humphreys, yesterday's USD leader (-1), who posted a +6 (78) on day two.
Humphreys' eagle on the sixth hole, a 571-yard par five, was the highlight of the day for USD. His three birdies again fronted the team in that category on the day. His front nine score of 35 was the lone under-par nine score of the day for the Toreros.
Sophomores
You Seong Choi and
Ryan Abuan scored a pair of 82s (+10) to round out the San Diego scoring contingent. They move to +11 and +13 overall respectively. With only the top four scores counting toward the team score per round, senior
Ian Maspat's +11 (83) was nulled.
USD will tee off for it's third starting at 1:40 p.m. on Sunday, May 25
th from the first hole.
