DURHAM, N.C. — Wrapping up a busy week in North Carolina, the No. 9/10 San Diego men's soccer team (0-1-1, 0-0-0 WCC) picked up a scoreless draw against No. 20 Furman (1-0-1, 0-0-0, Southern) on Sunday afternoon from Koskinen Stadium.
The Toreros' out shot the Paladins by a 7-6 margin on Sunday, while senior goalkeeper Adam Salama picked up his first USD clean sheet as he recorded a pair of key saves against San Diego's second ranked opponent in as many matches.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Getting the action started on Sunday afternoon, each sides traded a pair of fouls before USD earned a corner kick at the nine minute mark but couldn't find the back of the net.
- The Paladins would record the game's first shot in the 19th minute as the game remained scoreless.
- USD's first shot of the game would come courtesy of Josh Martinez who fired left of the cage as both teams kept searching for the game's first goal.
- Just before the half, Noah James would generate a strong chance but his shot was wide left as the game remained scoreless heading into the break.
- Beginning the second half on the attack, the Toreros recorded three shots in a row from Iain Wagner, Devin Dillon and Taj Eagleston, but they couldn't break through on the scoreboard.
- USD's defense did a great job of solidifying in the second half as they kept Furman from generating many chances through the first 25 minutes of the second half.
- Martinez would continue his strong offensive afternoon as he would record a shot that sailed right in the 76th minute to keep up the pressure.
- With just under ten seconds on the clock, the Paladins had a great chance to break through, but their shot was corralled by Salama in goal as the Toreros earned a hard fought draw to wrap up the first week of the regular season.
