No. 25 Toreros Earn a Hard Fought Draw Against the Roos

Iain Wagner takes the team lead in goals in Saturday's draw

SAN DIEGO — Sophomore midfielder Iain Wagner scored his third goal of the season and Lucca Adams recorded his first collegiate save as No. 25 San Diego Men's soccer (4-1-2, 0-0-0 WCC) drew with Kansas City (2-1-4, 0-0-0 Summit) 1-1 at Torero Stadium on Saturday evening.

USD struck first when a hurled ball from Owen Walz was whipped into the box finding a wide open Wagner for the opening goal of the match in the 72nd minute, as he scored his third goal of 2025 putting him in front as the Toreros leading goal scorer.

The Roos responded in quick succession with the equalizer to make it 1-1, the result that would eventually hold until the final whistle.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • San Diego started the game hot with a shot from Josh Martinez in the fourth minute that was deflected and fell right to Luca Fava in the box who fired a shot towards the top corner, but a great stop from the Roos' goalkeeper kept it scoreless.
  • The Toreros' next chance came in the 20th minute when Noah James made a run inside the six yard box but his shot flew just over the top of the bar.
  • The Roos had a great chance in the 33rd minute with a shot from the top of the 18-yard box, but a phenomenal reaching save from Lucca Adams kept the match deadlocked.
  • Three minutes later, James crossed a ball into the six-yard box that found Ethan Warne's head and was halfway across the goal line when the UMKC goalkeeper came swooping in at the last second to prevent the goal.
  • The Toreros continued to knock on the door as the half came to a close, as a missed bicycle kick from Godwin Antwi went straight to Devin Zachry's head and bounced off the cross bar, keeping the ball out of the Kansas City net once again.
  • USD's first chance of the second half came in the 59th minute when Zachry unleashed a shot towards the bottom left corner of the goal but yet another save from the goalkeeper kept it 0-0.
  • San Diego finally broke the tie when Cesar Bahena laid the ball off for Walz who whipped in a perfect cross which connected with Wagner in the box for a wide open header which he slotted home to give the Toreros the first lead of the game in the 72nd minute.
  • It did not take long for the Roos to respond as they sent a free kick into the box that took an awkward bounce off of Adams and fell straight to a UMKC player who scored the equalizer just a minute after the opening goal of the match.
  • After a lengthy VAR check for a possible penalty in the 86th minute, the referee concluded that there was no contact and no penalty was awarded.
  • UMKC earned a corner kick with 10 seconds remaining but did not convert, ending the match at a 1-all stalemate.
TORERO TIDBITS
