SAN DIEGO – Beginning the program's spring schedule on their home courts, the San Diego women's tennis team picked up a 5-2 victory over crosstown foe UC San Diego on Wednesday afternoon at the Skip and Cindy Hogan Tennis Center.
San Diego was able to get off to quick start as the doubles pairing of
Hannah Read and
Anni Moll won their match by a 6-3 final score. UCSD was able to rebound in the remaining pair of doubles matches as they picked up the first team point of the afternoon prior to singles play.
Bouncing back in a big way to get singles action going, the Toreros would pick up three quick victories in succession as
Maria Shmakova,
Vilma Krebs Hyllested and
Hannah Read each won in two sets to give San Diego the next three team points.
Securing the match-clinching point for her team,
Charlotte Keitel picked up an impressive two set victory with a 7-5 score in the deciding set as the Toreros picked up their first victory of the new year.
Making her debut as a Torero, freshman
Ines Leon put together a strong effort before ultimately falling in three sets on Wednesday afternoon.
