SAN DIEGO – Hosting an ITA Kick-Off Weekend regional for the first time in program history, No. 8 USD men's tennis fell 4-2 to Arizona State on Saturday afternoon in the opening round of play Friday.
 
After starting the season with back-to back-victories 5-2 over ranked opponents in No. 16 Baylor and on the road over No. 19 USC, San Diego was looking to keep their hot start to the season going, and looked to be headed that way early in the match
 
San Diego got off to a quick start when ranked No. 71 doubles partnership of Adrien Berrut and Lambert Ruland secured a 6-0 bagel on main court before senior Oliver Tarvet and freshman Vincent Marysko won their match on court three 6-2, giving the Toreros a convincing first point of the day heading into singles play.
 
In singles, Tarvet dominated in the first set, winning 6-0 before winning by retirement from ASU's very proven winner Bor Artnak in the second set while Tarvet led 3-0. ASU responded after dropping the first two points of the day, as both Marysko and freshman Manvydas Balciunas battled but lost identical tough first sets in tiebreaker fashion, 7-6 (7-5). 
 
After dropping three points on courts six, four and two in straight sets, USD found itself at a 2-3 deficit as both programs rallied behind the third and fifth courts awaiting the result. Balciunas battled from down 4-3 in the second set to getting the advantage at 5-4, but senior Neo Niedner dropped his match's second set, ultimately halting the Toreros chances of coming back.
